Music on Main

Music on Main At a Music on Main concert, there are great musicians, engaging music, and the chance to make new friends, meet the artists, and escape your to-do list.

Launched to critical acclaim in 2006, Music on Main is dedicated to producing classical, new, and genre-bending music in environments that are both casual and stimulating, expanding access to the arts along Vancouver’s Main Street corridor, and engaging audiences in new venues throughout the city. A concert series at Heritage Hall and a Tuesday night series at the Cellar Restaurant & Jazz Club are

at the core of Music on Main’s artistic activities, with a strong focus on music of our time and featuring excellent professional musicians in innovative concert formats. By the end of its fourth season, Music on Main will have produced more than 100 events in the City of Vancouver. With the goal of integrating concert music into the lives of its audiences, Music on Main adopts innovative and refreshing formats for concert-going that create social environments and build community. At a typical Music on Main concert at Heritage Hall, the bar opens at 7:00 PM, the one-hour concert runs from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and the audience is invited to hang out with the musicians and each other after the concert. During “A Month of Tuesdays” at the Cellar Restaurant & Jazz Club, audience members order dinner and drinks before the concert or at intermission, then when the bar service stops for the performance, everyone listens with a renewed intensity. These formats lead to relaxed yet engaged listening environments, environments often lacking in the classical and new music world.

On April 14, 2026, Music on Main audiences experienced a new way to hear the viola. That night, Canadian violist, composer, and producer Ryan Davis took the stage as RADIA, showing us the instrument in an entirely new light.

Now you can experience that performance for yourself with our newest video release featuring Henri Vieuxtemps’ Capriccio in C Minor, Op. 55 alongside Davis’s original composition Tokyostep for viola and electronics.

Watch video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yC-Hxm0_Ng

Blending virtuosic classical performance with immersive electronic textures, RADIA creates a genre-defying musical experience that bridges contemporary classical, folk, hip-hop, and experimental soundscapes.

This striking performance highlights both the expressive depth of the viola tradition and the instrument’s evolving future.

Adelya Mullasheva, an SCA Music & Sound student and Artistic Director of the artistic collective Senses, is Music on Main's new Summer Artistic & Administrative Specialist. Music on Main shared a nice Q&A with Adelya in their newsletter (you should subscribe to it!), which we've copied here (and hope to see on their website soon!):

Meet Adelya Mullasheva, our Summer Artistic & Administrative Specialist!

We're excited to welcome Adelya Mullasheva to the Music on Main team this summer! As our Artistic & Administrative Specialist, Adelya is helping with the behind the scenes of implementing and managing our summer events and upcoming season.

Adelya is a multimedia artist, vocalist, improviser, performer, and experimental composer from Kazakhstan. Her works treat sound as a living organism, shaping acoustic environments that respond to presence and action. She invites audiences to participate, forming human connections through collective input.

Q&A with Adelya:

What do you do at Music on Main?

I work and learn from the administrative side of Music on Main. It is a unique opportunity to deeply understand the details and structures behind creating large scale events and bringing them to their best possible form. By interacting with different departments of the team, I am learning the broader picture of the entire creative and organizational process behind production.

What is your favorite type of music?

I am a musician myself, so I approach listening as an active practice and a full experience on its own. I find inspiration in everything that surrounds us because it opens possibilities for discovering new approaches to working with music regardless of genre or form. I am especially interested in experimental and intuitive ways of creating sound. One of my recent projects was a performance with vocals and Modular Serge Synth, which I found deeply intuitive and emotionally engaging both in performance and in the process of working with the instrument itself.

What are you looking forward to doing over the summer?

I am also the Artistic Director of an artistic collective called “Senses”. Because of that, working with Music on Main is especially meaningful to me as an opportunity to better understand the structure and inner workings of arts organizations while contributing to projects such as the Kessler Academy and Summer Pop-Up Concerts taking place this August.

This summer as “Senses” we hope to organize regular events, workshops, and gatherings that allow us to grow together as a collective on the path toward a larger showcase in August 2026. At the same time, we want to make this process open and accessible to the public and connected to local community life.

What is the one thing you can’t live without?

My loved ones. My supportive family gives me confidence in every step I take, and my friends deeply understand both my soul and my mind. I feel incredibly grateful to be surrounded by people who encourage me to grow while still allowing me to fully be myself.

What is your favorite quote or words to live by?

I have always found this question difficult because there are so many thoughts and ideas that inspire me. But connected to the previous question, there is one phrase that has stayed with me for a very long time. Growing up, my uncle turned it into a small ritual and would always ask me:

“Adele, what is the most important thing in life?”

And I would answer:

“To love and to be loved.”

Over time these words became deeply meaningful to me. Love is not only a feeling, but also a way of interacting with the world around you. To love what you do, to care deeply about people, to approach life with sincerity and attention, and to create with intention. But equally important is being able to cherish and receive the love that comes back to you. I feel incredibly fortunate to be loved by some of the most inspiring and caring people I know.

Do you have any upcoming projects you are excited about?

As I mentioned earlier, the “Senses” artistic collective is planning several new events this summer. We will be closely collaborating with “alternaTe” Collective through workshops, open air gatherings, and shared creative events. Together we will be exploring ways to upcycle, recycle, and work with different materials in artistic practice.

Through this process we hope to bring attention to questions of consumption, sustainability, and the afterlife of production while also making creative practices more accessible. We want to open our creative process to the Vancouver community and allow people to participate, observe, and create alongside us.

I am very excited for the upcoming season and everything that will grow from it. You can stay updated through our Instagram: .artcollective

Standing Wave takes the stage with music by some of today’s most compelling composers, including Canadian composer Bekah Simms, whose music has been praised as moving “from the tumultuous and grotesque to the sublime and fleetingly lyrical,” (Kulturní Magazín) in a style full of movement, bold colour, mystery, and sharp contrasts.

Tomorrow night at the Fox Cabaret you will experience her composition “metamold” performed by Standing Wave Ensemble. Watch our video of Bekah Simms’ single Red flower, performed by Standing Wave Ensemble, and experience why her music is captivating audiences everywhere.
