On September 27th, Web Of Life Society & Captain Scott Legacy Society teamed up for the 46th annual BC River's Day celebration to continue a large multi-year ongoing cleanup of the northern Coquitlam River watershed.

The event started with introductions to almost 30 volunteers to the lead organizers, a safety orientation, and a note about this special province wide event, held annually by the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC.

Armed with a wheelbarrow, a large box of heavy duty demolition bags, two way radios, and PPE, two big teams worked both on shuttling bagged up trash to the next waypoint along the trail for eventual municipal removal, and also cleaning the old dump site at the stream where tens of thousands of pounds of plastics, furniture, old car parts, and appliances have sat for decades.

This event held special significance, as the Coquitlam River is a salmon bearing waterway and used to be on the "BC's Top 10 Endangered Rivers" list several years in a row. Thanks to the work of organizations like Watershed Watch Salmon Society, the dedicated restoration efforts of Kwikwetlem First Nation, and changes to local industry to protect the river, water flows and quality have improved as well as the reintroduction of sockeye salmon.

The BC River's Day event on September 27th continues that legacy, and aims to protect the watershed by removing thousands of pounds of plastics and debris, which are harmful to the aquatic ecology.

Yesterday, on September 19th, Web Of Life Society joined Boro and Beyond Media for a huge multi-location cleanup on Burke Mountain in Coquitlam!
~
Web Of Life organized a small side quest cleanup in a section of forest that has been on our radar for quite a while. You can see the results with two amazing volunteers who put in hard work to help extract it from the forest 🫶
~
The main abandoned encampment we cleaned up was barely visible during the first survey work and was completely buried in years of needle duff and moss. One volunteer verified the date of an old stick of deodorant we found at the camp to somewhere between 2007 and 2010, meaning this encampment and all the trash has been sitting in the forest for potentially 16-19 years!!
~
We love doing this work, and making a tangible impact in our ecosystems for all the wildlife, the beautification, and reducing microplastics from entering the soil and moving up the food chain, and also preventing harmful chemicals and plastics from getting into our sensitive waterways

We have another massive cleanup along the northern Coquitlam River for BC River's Day on September 27th with Captain Scott Legacy Society , and invasive species removal and restoration events planned for this October in Port Coquitlam with Captain Scott Legacy, as well as another big shoreline cleanup in Richmond for October 11th. 102 TIRES! That's how many tires we extracted from the Fraser River shoreline in Richmond during our last cleanup, teaming up with Volunteer Wave ( Captain Scott Legacy Society - check out their events btw, they have tons of great ways to volunteer and give back to the community aside from our stewardship partnership)

To celebrate BC Rivers Day, join Volunteer Wave ( Captain Scott Legacy Society ) and Web Of Life Society for a community cleanup along the North Coquitlam River!

Together, we’ll help care for the river and surrounding trails while spending time outdoors and connecting with our community.
Volunteers can choose between:

Please note: The cleanup site is approximately a 25-minute walk from the meet-up location, followed by another 25-minute walk back. We’ve extended the event to allow time for the trail walk, so please come prepared for some extra walking.

What to bring:
🥾 Boots are recommended, as trail conditions may be muddy.
👖 Weather-appropriate clothing and long pants.
🎨 Avoid light-coloured clothing, as you may get dirty.
💧 A reusable water bottle if you’d like. Water and light refreshments will be provided, but let’s keep it eco-friendly where we can!
🌲 Be prepared to spend time outdoors and walk on uneven or muddy trails.
All cleanup and invasive species removal supplies will be provided.

Did you know there are ecological/compostable alternatives to styrofoam? Walking our coastal and river shorelines is extremely important for finding and removing this form of persistent waste before it breaks down into impossibly small to manage micro polystyrene bits
~
Aside from the beach and river cleanup sessions, we also need to focus on bringing plastic and styrofoam alternatives into mainstream production and even legislation. There are several alternatives to styrofoam in particular, including protective packaging that is composed of mycelium! Imagine getting a package in the mail, and instead of having to toss a piece of styrofoam in the trash that will eventually go to landfill, you could compost it in your backyard garden or municipal compost and it would later add more biomass to build healthy soil in your community
~
It can be really daunting sometimes to see the scale of ecological degradation and pollutants entering ecosystems, and yet we are very optimistic about the plethora of solutions ready for global implementation!

Join Volunteer Wave ( Captain Scott Legacy Society ) and Web Of Life Society for a shoreline cleanup along the Fraser River in South Richmond! Together, we’ll help remove litter from the shoreline and surrounding D**e Trail area, protecting local wildlife and helping keep our waterways clean. This event was made possible thanks to the City of Richmond’s Environmental Enhancement and Food Security grant, as well as support from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority who has provided as with permission into the area for cleaning and parking.

The shoreline cleanup will involve moderate physical activity, including walking along the D**e Trail, safely accessing sections of the shoreline, collecting litter such as plastic waste, tires, and other wieldy garbage, and transporting filled garbage bags to a designated collection point. Volunteers may also need to lift, carry, or drag garbage bags during the cleanup. E-bikes and bicycles are welcome to help transport garbage up and down the trail.

All participants will sign a waiver before event participation. Please note that children and youth under 19 must have their guardian/adult consent to their participation via Bloomerang (our volunteer management system) or a physical waiver given to our staff on the day of the event. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a trusted adult. Drop-in volunteers are welcome.

Please note that this cleanup starts early because we need to access the shoreline during low tide!

As we will be in the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority area, please ensure your vehicle remains clear of access routes and do not obstruct operations in the area. Parking will be along the shoulder of the road either South or North of the D**e Trail nearby where we are meeting.

If you are heading east on Blundell Road, take a right onto No.8 and then a right onto Portside Road, but if you are heading west on Blundell Road, take a left onto No.8, then a right onto Portside Road (No.8 is very short and in our route, serves as a connector to Portside). Once on Portside, take a left at Pro-Formance Intermodal (which is the first left down the gravel road).

Overflow parking is available along Portside Road where signage indicates parking is allowed as well.

What to Bring

Closed-toe shoes or boots suitable for uneven terrain and sand
Weather-appropriate clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty — we recommend avoiding white clothing and shorts!
A reusable water bottle, just in case (Note: Limited bottled water will be available if you run out. Light refreshments, and snacks will also be provided!)
Be prepared to spend time outdoors, walk a lot, and get a little dirty while making a difference!

Today, Hoy Scott Watershed Society teamed up with Web Of Life Society to haul the leftovers of an abandoned encampment out of the forest as well as cleaning lots more litter and trash from the forest trails and from the stream itself!
~
It was a very successful day in the rain with over 12 volunteers attending and cleaning up and making the watershed pristine, checking out the health of the stream + taking note of any invasive species needing removal
~

Today Web Of Life Society teamed up with Captain Scott Legacy Society for a big shoreline cleanup along the Fraser River in Richmond. Much appreciation for funding by City of Richmond through their Food Security & Environmental Grant program! Thanks Peter for displaying this styrofoam block we cleaned from the shoreline 🚮🏆Styrofoam was prolific along the shoreline, and you'll see more of our final results soon!
