ha7lh skwáyel, ta néwyap / Good day everyone!

In case you missed it, & are presenting a screening this Thursday, September 25 at SFU Burnaby.

It tells of the incredible bravery our relatives' First Nations mothers (and our grandmothers and great grandmothers) met and married Filipino farmers on Bainbridge Island, WA in the 1940s. The documentary serves as a foundational work for a new dramatic fictional piece. More info below and via our website link in our bio. We hope you can join us!

HONOR THY MOTHER a documentary project
of the Indipino Community of Bainbridge Island

Thursday, September 25th
Reception: 5PM | Welcome & Screening: 5:30PM
FREE admission | No sign up required
Light refreshments & Bannock treats will be served

Location: The Leslie & Gordon Diamond Family Auditorium, SFU Burnaby Campus

Honor Thy Mother is the untold story of 36 Indigenous women from First Nations in British Columbia and Native American tribes in Washington State and Alaska who migrated to Bainbridge Island, WA in the 1940s, the traditional territory of the Suquamish people. Most of these women were survivors of Indian Residential Schools with some still in their teens. They went to Bainbridge Island to pick berries for Japanese American farmers. There, each of these women met and married Filipino immigrant men, creating mixed-heritage families of (Indigenous mother and Filipino father) Indipino children.

The voices of the Indipino children, now elders, are integral in the storytelling of their mothers’ courage and resilience, women who navigated colonial oppression and also took great risk marrying Asian men, some of whom became disenfranchised from the nineteen different Nations and Tribes they belonged to. Many Indipino children grew up in homes burdened with their parents’ trauma which was heightened by their collective memory of the Japanese Americans’ forced removal on the Island after President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 in 1942 and the tumult that ensued.

Talkback Panel with Gina Corpuz, Colleen Almojuela and Lanessa Cerrillo. Hosted by SFU Shadbolt Fellow ('24/'25) .

Chet kw'enman-túmi, our sincere thanks to and our guide Shae for a wonderful Love the Land tour on Monday gifted to Holy Crow. We brought together some superheroes in our orbit to share in the beauty of these lands, including plant medicines and teachings of stewardship that Coast Salish ancestors have practiced here for time immemorial. It all made for some positive people medicine on Red Dress day.

It was a special bonus to receive extra knowledge shared by cousin sharing a picnic at her artist-in-residence a-frame spot and for us to feast with amazing Mexican food by Oscar Diaz.

It was a joyful day to share some of Holy Crow's exciting initiatives and tours in the development stages. More to come!

Cole is a long time cherished friend and artistic collaborator of Holy Crow. Justin met Cole at Skwachays Lodge a few months before the pandemic, and directed him in our first show, So Damn Proud. They’ve since collaborated on other projects so it was an obvious choice and a pleasure to invite him to be a part of the Keepers ensemble. His skilled attention to detail and comedic impulses serve this story beautifully.
