Our crew burning in Spring 🌱 🔥

These wonderful women are shaping their communities, and reshaping the land into a healthier version, one burn at a time.

Continents apart, but a deep shared history of traditions and practices. Snow, grasslands, forests and meadows. Cultural fire unites us.

Our incredible exchange with .alliance this Spring on Tsilhqot’in land.

What benefits come from Cultural Burning?

So many! From ecological restoration, improving soil health, wildfire prevention, and very importantly… it’s fun.

No doubt, it’s hard work, but it’s easier when it is done together, with community members of all generations.

In this video, both elders and Yunesit’in community members share the joy of seeing kids have fun out on the land.

Every year spent burning together is another year of growing stronger as a nation 🔥

Springtime burning for a safer summer 🔥 🌱

During the cooler seasons, we use fire as a tool to regenerate and prepare the land for hot summers.

The Yunesit’in community has been burning with for nearly a decade. Over this time we’ve seen a huge amount of benefits, and not just for the land, but for people, animals, and communities too.

Check out our website and profile for cultural burning content and stories from the field.

Who we’re burning with🔥

“My name’s Jimmy Lulua. I’m from Xeni Gwet’in. My mom’s side’s from Stony (Yunesit’in). And Bellacoola, my dad’s sides from Anaham, Redstone, Nemaiah. We’ve been cultural burning for five, six years now. I’ve been coming every year and I’ve been doing this for most of my life, back where I’m from. There’s a lot of benefits from cultural burning not only for people to get out on the land but also revitalizing areas for horses, cattle, deer, bears.

My advice to other communities is just come and see. a lot of times communities will sit around a table and talk about it and look at photos, but I don’t feel like you will learn. As a First Nations person, we learn a little bit off of that kind of stuff, but you have to come out and see it and feel it in order to be able to trust it. I think there’s a lot of mistrust around cultural burning ‘cause we’ve been colonized as First Nations people, but, I think Stoney’s doing a unique program. They’re the only ones in the nation doing it. My advice to any community or anyone in their nation is to come and see. You don’t need to book an appointment, just get a hold of
myself for Russell. Come on out and check it out.”

Ice Fishing ❄️ 🎣

When we’re not burning, you can find us out on the lake, catching tonight’s dinner.

The stewardship we support at is holistic.

It includes not just fire stewardship (cultural burning) but also gathering, hunting, and celebrating in ways that are rooted in the Tsilhqot’in land, and Yunesit’in community.

And it’s the best when we can share this all with others, like .alliance this Spring.

Cultural Fire and the Seasons 🌱 ❄️ 🔥

This photo series shows the connection between fire and the seasons. Fire is an intricate part of Yunesit’in country, and burning at the right time creates incredible results.

This morning, as snow fell on Yunesit’in land, we burned by the river. Burning with the seasons is safer, and healthier, and prevents fires from getting out of control.

🔥❄️Fire & Ice❄️🔥

“We’re using the snow like how we use the rain at home. To treat those places with real flammable vegetation, or places that are sick. The fire here is staying nice low, moving across slowly, with all that extra moisture from the snow keeping it nice and cool.” – Matthew Whitelock, Bundjalung Man and Cultural Fire Practitioner at Firesticks.

What rain is to the Cultural Fire Practitioners in Australia - snow is for us on Yunesit’in land. Many environmental factors keep our fires low and slow, and safe. This exchange between Gathering Voices Society and Firesticks highlighted the ways Indigenous stewardship keeps the land healthy, even in vastly different environments.
