IS crime going down in our city? A lot depends on whether it’s being reported!

You may be tempted to avoid reporting a crime you witnessed or experienced. Maybe you think it’s too late for the police to do anything, or that the chance of apprehension is low. Report anyway! Reporting crimes tells VPD analysts what crimes are happening, when, and where. VPD can then allocate resources and personnel based on the REAL numbers, and not just the reported ones.

No business, bank, or agency will ask for payment through gift cards or, by deposit to a cryptocurrency ATM. Fraudsters use panic, fear, and false hope to separate you from your money – money you have no way of recovering. Educate yourself about scams, avoid answering unknown numbers, and double-check the legitimacy of return email addresses. Merchants: Learn to spot the signs of a customer being scammed.

We were thrilled to return to for their end-of-the-school-year Fun Fest! We met a lot of neighbours, and guided kids through a distracted walking course; to help learn about the importance of situational awareness when out in the community. Thanks to the PAC for the warm-welcome to their annual fundraiser.

Every day, Vancouverites toss one million cigarette butts on the ground. During dry, hot weather, these pose a serious threat of fire. They also pollute our environment and injure wildlife who inadvertently consume them. Violators are subject to fines ranging from $80 to $575. If your vehicle doesn't have an ashtray, get one installed.

With our pocket ashtrays, available from our storefront office, you will always have a safe way to dispose of your butts. Our volunteers will also be distributing these in the neighbourhood throughout the summer.

Today is World Environment Day, capping off a week of education and outreach on this year's focus: climate change. As we attend to the urgent signals the Earth is sending and the signals we choose to send back, UNEP’s global campaign calls on all of us to step in, to move further, to steer a world already in motion. The question is no longer if change comes, but how we guide it and how fast it happens.

There are now so many alternatives to regular bikes, it’s sometimes difficult to know what’s legal and what’s not, and where. VPD has supplied this simple guide:

⚠️E-scooters and e-bikes are legal to operate on streets and designated routes/paths, but there are speed and power restrictions (see graphic)
⚠️E-skateboards, hoverboards, and electric unicycles are NOT legal to operate on streets or public thoroughfares, but may be operated on private property
⚠️E-scooters and e-bikes are required to obey the Motor Vehicle Act, and the same bylaws for operating them as pertain to bicycles and cars.
⚠️Like cyclists, operators are required to wear a helmet, avoid the use of handheld devices or other distracted operation, and use front and rear lights when operating in the dark.

Did you know you can report some types of non-emergency crimes online? It is a faster and more convenient option than calling the nonemergency line.

The Vancouver Police Department provides the option of reporting the following crimes online:
⚠️ Lost or stolen property under $10,000
⚠️ Vandalism to property or vehicle where repairs are expected to be under $10,000
⚠️ Car break-in
⚠️ Hate crime without violence and without a suspect
⚠️ Financial crimes, such as credit card, bank card, or cheque theft, if you have lost less than $10,000 and don't have a suspect

This past weekend, volunteers joined our friends from Gordon Neighbourhood House to help clean up our neighbourhood. This is crime prevention in action: places that are well-maintained, where residents care about their built environment, experience fewer incidents of crime and vandalism. Thanks, team!

June is Pride Month: an opportunity to celebrate our unique gender and sexual identities, focusing on those who still face discrimination, exclusion, and violence. Most homeless youth identify as 2SLGBTQ, and q***r and trans people are more likely to live alone and/or without family supports than their straight counterparts. With antigay and anti-trans incidents rising, it is important now more than ever to find opportunities to connect and support one another!

The Vancouver Pride Society and other organizations have a host of activities planned for the City's own Pride week during the first week of August. Check out what's happening at https://www.vancouverpride.ca/!
