Did you know October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week?

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on something many of us use every day: lithium-ion batteries.

From phones and laptops to e-bikes, scooters, power tools and more, rechargeable batteries are part of our everyday lives. Safe charging habits can help reduce the risk of fires:

• Use the charger and cord that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
• Charge on a hard, flat surface, not on a bed, couch or pillow.
• Unplug devices when they’re fully charged.
• Stop using a battery if it becomes unusually hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, smokes or makes unusual sounds.

What would you do if an earthquake happened right now?

On October 15 at 10:15 a.m., people across B.C. will take part in the Great BC ShakeOut, an annual earthquake drill organized by the BC Earthquake Alliance. More than 500,000 people in B.C. are already registered to practice "Drop, Cover and Hold On."

Earthquake risk is a reality across B.C. While the level of risk varies by location, B.C. is considered at high risk compared with the rest of Canada. Our province has experienced major earthquakes before, including the magnitude 9 Cascadia earthquake in 1700.

The ShakeOut is more than a few minutes of practicing what to do during an earthquake. It’s a chance to learn about earthquake risk, review your emergency plan and supplies, and look around your home or workplace for ways to reduce potential damage and injuries.

Take part on October 15, and take a little time now to get prepared.

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, a day to remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, honour Survivors and their families, and recognize the enduring impacts of the residential school system.

It is also an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on this history and its lasting impacts. Education and understanding are essential to meaningful reconciliation.

We encourage our members and community to take time to learn, reflect and remember.
