On October 22nd, come experience this talk in a heritage building!
Complementing this year’s Why We Do Heritage: The Chinatown Bachelors and the Wongs’ Benevolent Association, this talk will feature Catherine Clement and MOV’s curator of urban cultures Denise Fong, co-curator of the A Seat at the Table exhibition (2020-2023) at the Museum of Vancouver and at the Wongs’ Hon Hsing Building. Jeffrey Wong from the Benevolent Association will join our guests.

With the expertise of Catherine Clement, the acclaimed curator of the Paper Trail exhibit which opened the Chinese Canadian Museum in 2023, the Wongs are currently turning their second-floor rooms of their Hon Hsing building into a rooming house exhibition with a planned opening for 2027. It focuses on the Chinese bachelors, an often overlooked chapter of Canadian history. An exhibition can start a conversation, but how do we keep that conversation going? NEW SNEAK PREVIEW

We continue last year’s How We Do Heritage: Chinatown and the Wongs’ Benevolent Association tours with a new tour for 2026: Why We Do Heritage: the Chinatown Bachelors and the Wongs’ Benevolent Association

On the tour, we’ll give a brief glimpse in to the bachelor rooms floor where the exhibition will be. We will walk through Chinatown to highlight the larger context between the bachelors, historical discrimination and why it matters today including the urban planning of the neighbourhood. We will also visit the Wongs' archives space in their heritage building where we will have a conversation about the Wongs and their relationship to the bachelors and why they are taking on this exhibition project.

Join us to hear about why the Wongs do heritage. Together we’ll consider the questions: what defines Chinatown, how that should be expressed, and what a Chinatown is for present day.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

We are bringing back our tour from last year’s where we show the different ways the Wongs are trying to do heritage in Chinatown today and the challenges they face. Description and registration are below.

Tour Description

Rarely is heritage about a single issue. This tour and discussion explores the connections between social history, cultural identity, the physical building and its uses and the current context of Chinatown. We take advantage of being on location at the Wongs' Benevolent Society building and the Hon Hsing Building together with representatives from the Wongs’ Benevolent Association to make the topic of heritage understandable, relevant and relatable.

We will tour the two buildings on Pender and take a short walk around the surrounding part of Chinatown to provide context. This will be followed by a sit down talk, discussion and group reflection in the historic Wongs' Benevolent Association building after the walk.
