Wongs' Benevolent Association of Canada 加拿大黄氏宗親總會

Wongs' Benevolent Association of Canada 加拿大黄氏宗親總會 The Wongs' Benevolent Association is dedicated to preserving the rich history and stories of early Chinese Canadian immigrants from the Wong clan.

The origins of the Wong Benevolent Association dates back to 1912, when the Wong Wun Sun Society and 1922 when the Wong Kung har Tong was established in Vancouver, BC. The two organizations were formed for different purposes in the past, but in 1970 they decided to consolidate and merge into the Wong's Benevolent Association, which was registered as a charitable organization.

And that's a wrap for 2025!

After having completed more than 76 performances for the year, Hon Hsing would like to give heartfelt thanks to all of its patrons, clients and friends for their trust by providing them with traditional Chinese celebrations to fit their special occasions. Lastly, our deep gratitude and thanks to the Wongs' Benevolent Association of Canada 加拿大黄氏宗親總會 for being our main patron for the past 86 years and for giving us the freedom to do what we do best!

Your support means the world to us in order that we may continue to teach the beauty of traditional Chinese culture to a new generation of youth, and to continue to share it with the rest of Canadian society.

Wishing you all a happy & healthy new year and we'll see you in February, 2026 when we welcome in the Year of the Horse!

Friendly reminder our 2025 Lin Lecture will be hosted at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden this Sunday, November 16th, 1PM!

The Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC presents this year's Paul and Eileen Lin Commemorative Lecture, marking the 100th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's passing and commemorating his three historic visits to Vancouver in 1897, 1910, and 1911.

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, recognized as the founding president of China by both Mainland China and Taiwan, was a revolutionary leader who received strong support from Chinese Canadian communities. This lecture explores the remarkable intersections between Confucius, China's greatest sage; Vancouver, a key centre of support for his revolutionary cause; and Dr. Sun, a scholar whose intellectual and political journey bridges both worlds.

This year's Lin Lecturer is Dr. Frank Abbott and the respondents are Jeffrey Wong of Wongs' Benevolent Association of Canada 加拿大黄氏宗親總會 and Dr. Henry Yu.

Admission: FREE and open to the public, though this lecture does not include admission to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden

Join us on Saturday Sept 6 and Sunday 7th at 10am and 1:30pm for a unique tour on tangible and intangible heritage!

Spots are limited so RSVP in the link in our bio or www.eventbrite.ca/e/how-we-do-heritage-chinatown-and-the-wongs-benevolent-association-tickets-1571979225179

This tour and discussion explores the connections between social history, cultural identity, the physical building and its uses and the current context of Chinatown. We take advantage of being on location at the Wongs' Benevolent Association building and the Hon Hsing Building to make the topic of heritage understandable, relevant and relatable.

We will tour the two buildings on Pender and take a short walk around the surrounding part of Chinatown to provide context. This will be followed by a sit-down talk, discussion and group reflection in the historic Wongs' Benevolent Association building.

We explore the Wongs’ relationships with historical discrimination, their buildings and physical heritage, succession, and efforts to pass down tradition and living cultural practices within the context of the whole of Chinatown today and the multiple ways the Wongs understand heritage.

We discuss together how a current generation of Wongs are caring for their heritage in an environment where the dominant and lasting idea of heritage, especially in city planning terms, is the single issue of the physical heritage building.

This event is a collaboration between the Wongs’ Benevolent Association and Heritage Vancouver Society. It is made possible by the financial support of the Department of Canadian Heritage.
