Children don’t learn to read through direct instruction alone. Learning requires interaction. ➡️ Children observe their teachers sounding out words and practice on their own and with classmates.️ ➡️ Children listen to their librarians read stories aloud and begin to understand the meaning of new words.️ ➡️ Children see their classmates try, fail and try again, and quickly learn the role of trial and error in learning new skills.
That’s why we partnered with Sri Lanka’s Central Provincial Ministry of Education to support the development of pre-school teacher trainings focused specifically on the power of reading aloud to children. Trainings show how interactive, teacher-led oral readings support children in building vocabulary, improving comprehension, and, importantly, developing social-emotional skills like problem-solving, perspective-taking and emotional-relating — skills that all children need to learn.
By initiating a practice of group read-alouds in pre-primary school settings, we are making room for young children across Sri Lanka to enter the early grades with a strong foundation for learning.
