🚨 SCAM ALERT: Protect Our Seniors from "Blessing Scams" 🚨

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is warning the community about a rise in "blessing scams" targeting older adults. Over the last month, several seniors in Vancouver have lost thousands of dollars and precious jewellery to these fraudsters.
How it works:

1️⃣ Fraudsters approach a senior in the neighbourhood and act friendly.
2️⃣ They convince the senior that a terrible curse or bad luck is coming to their family.
3️⃣ They offer to perform a "spiritual blessing" to wash away the curse.
4️⃣ They ask the senior to bring out cash and jewellery in a bag.
5️⃣ Using distraction tricks, they secretly swap the bag with a worthless one (filled with things like juice boxes or rocks) and tell the senior not to open it for a few days.
How to stay safe:

Keep your distance: Do not let strangers get too close or hand you unsolicited gifts.

Never hand over valuables: Do not give your cash or jewellery to anyone you do not know.

Make noise: If you feel unsafe or targeted, yell to get the attention of people around you.

We need your help! Please talk to your parents, grandparents, and neighbours about this scam. Word of mouth is our best tool to keep our community safe.

If you see suspicious activity or think you have been targeted, call 9-1-1 right away. You can also report incidents to the VPD non-emergency line at 604-717-3321.

Stay safe, Grandview-Woodland! 💙

Beating the heat and building a safer community! ☀️🍦

We set up shop outside the Grandview-Woodland Community Policing Centre today to connect with our amazing neighbours. With the hot weather rolling in, we gave away dozens of ice cream sandwiches and freezies to help everyone cool down and yes, we had treats for our favorite furry neighborhood pets too! 🐶
But it wasn’t just about the treats. We had a blast passing out:

✨ Reflectors & stickers for visibility
🚶‍♂️ Information on our Promoting Walking Grandview initiative
📋 Crucial crime prevention documents to keep our streets safe
🎉 Custom buttons & tons of meaningful conversations!

A massive thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to chat, ask questions, or just grab a sweet treat. Working together is how we keep GW safe, vibrant, and connected.
Missed us this time? Drop by the CPC anytime to grab resources, or just say hello! 👋
