Its Trans History Month! 🏳️‍⚧️🙏

Did you know that here in British Columbia, the University of Victoria Libraries is home to the world’s largest Transgender Archives?

It’s a living collection of transgender, nonbinary, and Two-Spirit history from around the world that preserves these stories for generations to come.

Meet Michael, one of the librarians at the Archives, who takes us inside the collection, including historic publications that trace decades of transgender history.

“I’m walking authentically as myself, not as nobody’s man, nobody’s this, or that, but as Pat.”

International Butch Appreciation Day is celebrated annually on August 18th. It is a day dedicated to uplifting butch identifying individuals for their unique contributions to the le***an community.

Butches have long been advocates, activists and cultural powerhouses, pushing le***anism to the front of the zeitgeist.

Authors like Leslie Feinberg revived butch-femme gender dynamics in the 90s. The phenomenon initially began in the 40s/50s but was later shunned as being “heteronormative”.

When authors like Feinberg challenged this and presented that butches disrupt the status quo, people began to newly appreciate the contributions of the butch community.

As a more visibly othered demographic, butches are more likely to face discrimination for their sexual orientation. The day is all about showing our support for masculine-presenting le***ans and all that they have done for the q***r community.

This is Pat, a 71 years young, fiercely fabulous senior butch woman who tells it like it is to the younger generations in this wonderful video from THEM Magazine.

Celebrate Senior Pride! 🌈✨

This fabulous Amsterdam drag duo “De Roze Vlinders” share their heartwarming visits to assisted living homes and their performance at the recent Senior Pride Concert at Amsterdam’s World Pride celebrations.

What does it mean to connect generations through music, camp, and glamour? The duo (Shirley Sassy & Ashley Knight) brings joy and nostalgic songs to those proving that sparkle and pride never grow old. 💜

It’s important to celebrate our q***r elders and to ensure that they can remain open and proud throughout their senior years. Initiatives like De Roze Vlinders go a long way towards that.

Many thanks to for this wonderful look at our community working together to celebrate our seniors and elders. 🏳️‍🌈🙏🏳️‍⚧️

For Throwback Thursday we are celebrating Trans History Month and its beginnings in California via PFLAG San Francisco

“Stonewall wasn’t first. San Francisco was. 🏳️‍⚧️

On an August night in 1966, a police officer grabbed a trans woman at Gene Compton’s Cafeteria in the area of San Francisco known as “The Tenderloin”. She threw her coffee in his face and the room fought back. Three years before Stonewall.

That night is why California and the world mark Transgender History Month every August. Trans Latina advocate Jupiter Peraza (she/her) and The Transgender District made it official in San Francisco in 2021, then carried it to the State Assembly in 2023, which passed it unanimously. California was the first state in the country to do it.

The people at Compton’s were mostly young. Most were in the Tenderloin because home had stopped being an option.”

Many thanks to PFLAG San Francisco for this important piece of our 2SLGBTQIA+ history. Visit their page and support your local PFLAG chapter. 🏳️‍🌈🙏🏳️‍⚧️
