Women Transforming Cities

Women Transforming Cities We reshape who cities are built by and for so that communities’ needs are met and everyone can belong, participate, and thrive.

Women Transforming Cities (WTC) aims to radically shift social, economic, and political power to equity-deserving groups to reshape who cities are built by and for so that communities’ needs are met and everyone can belong, participate, and thrive. We do this with an intersectional feminist lens through civic literacy and
education, research, advocacy and collaboration.

On a sunny Saturday last month, we held our public Shape Your Community workshop with Co-Share Collective (Hua Foundation, Hogan's Alley Society, UBC Asian Canadian Research and Engagement, Chinatown Celebration Society). We had in-depth conversations about what our neighbourhoods could look like so all of us can thrive.

Some key solutions:

🌱 Low income transit pass
🪴 More public washrooms on the DTES
🌿 Culturally relevant “third spaces” like a community living room
🍃 Mixed-use zoning and neighbourhoods
🌳 To address “no-fun city,” less bureaucracy and fast-tracking applications for arts and culture events
[Participants shown throughout the workshop. Playful moments include posing with peace signs during a group activity, laughing as they work together. Folks are concentrating as they read, while others are pointing to a sheet on a wall, speaking.]

🗣️ Affordability. Community well-being. Social connection. Here are some of the things that we’re hearing from Shape Your Community workshop participants on what they need on these core issues from the next city council. What would you add?

👉🏼 Let us know what you need to belong, participate, and thrive in Vancouver by completing WTC’s anonymous Our City Hall Survey. The deadline to enter this month’s optional draw for a $100 Visa gift card is this Friday, June 5th.

Complete the survey:

👉🏼 Affordable transit is frequently an issue that comes up. Movement YVR is campaigning for a low income transit pass in Metro Vancouver. WTC will be at Vancouver City Hall today to support the Creating a Low Income Transit Pass motion that is on council agenda.

🗄️ WTC’s Our City Hall Survey has been up for the past few months, and so far, 52% of women, trans, and gender-diverse respondents say that since the last Vancouver election, the city council’s decisions have rarely or never reflected their views, concerns, and needs.

🎙️ The survey is a crucial way to use your voice to create change and be part of the Our City Hall campaign. The more people who complete the survey, the more impact we will have when we push for policy change.

🗯️ In just 15 minutes, you can take the survey to answer questions on changes you’d like to see, what a healthy city means to you, and also rank what you believe should be council priorities.

On Fri, May 29th, WTC and Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre will be hosting Shape Your Community workshop on local government and tools for change!

From public transit to housing to food security, city governments make decisions that impact you every day. As we approach the 2026 local elections, we invite you to join us for a 2-hour workshop to learn more about how local government works—and how we can shape city decisions to work better for our community.

Share your experiences, priorities, and brainstorm what you need in your neighbourhood to thrive and help make Vancouver a place where everyone can belong.

All community members welcome.

This workshop is part of WTC’s Our City Hall campaign to amplify underrepresented voices in Vancouver elections, turning community priorities into real council action. Through this campaign, WTC listens to community needs, shapes them into clear policy priorities, secures
candidate commitments during the 2026 election, and holds city council accountable throughout their four-year term. By joining this workshop, you’ll add your voice to these priorities.

See you next week!

WTC board members (Aman, Claire, Belinda) and staff (Alexa, Sadie) were at May Day events for a weekend to celebrate labour justice!

It was joyful to be in community alongside wonderful organizations (Movement, Salal, Worker Solidarity Network) that are working to build a free and just society based on democracy, solidarity, and collective power.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with us about the Our City Hall campaign. We heard great responses and feedback from community members. And thank you to Vancouver District Labour Council and Democratic Socialists for inviting us!
