Thank you Foundation for Black Communities for funding the Hogan’s Alley Society Community Archive that featured in the recent Hogan’s Alley Resurgence Event on September 26th! With this support, we were able to create a Black community-led activation featuring live “family” portraits shot by Simone Chnarakis, Archival readings by Kashay Kelsick of the Vancouver Black Library, and a fabric based archiving station made to build upon an intricate archival tapestry board filled with our community’s stories.

By inviting community to join in this collaboration under the leadership of Joshua Robertson, we proudly honour the knowledge, memory, and continuum of Afro-diasporic life in “Vancouver” and beyond!

As we approach National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, we are reminded of the importance of continually reflecting upon and renewing our ongoing commitments towards Indigenous solidarity.

For us at the Co-Share Collective, what does it mean for our organizations to think and act with the intention of upholding Indigenous sovereignty, and the dismantling of colonial systems?

As we engage with questions like these throughout our work, we also believe that sharing this process with our communities is a meaningful part of our commitment. We offer the following reflections from across our organizations, and invite others to consider what forms their own commitments to Indigenous solidarity may take.

At Hogan's Alley Society (HAS) , collective liberation involves building substantial relationships with Indigenous community members. In particular, our work against further displacements and toward culturally informed housing on stolen land requires careful consideration of who actually has access to stable, affordable and safe housing
As a result of colonial violence, Indigenous communities remain highly overrepresented in homeless populations across BC, facing increased rates of eviction. Through our programmes and operation of Nora Hendrix Place (NHP), we implement culturally informed housing approaches that strive to learn from and serve the needs of Indigenous communities facing these barriers.

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we’re encouraging HAS and NHP Staff to engage in a guided reflection on the 94 Calls to Action, or the core categories they address. 🌟 Let’s Talk Women of Color: Let’s Talk Women of Colour, is a registered youth-led nonprofit creating spaces in Vancouver where young women of colour can engage with social issues, activism beyond the echo chambers of social media. Their flagship initiative is a series of monthly Coffee Chats hosted in local cafés across Vancouver to discuss topics like racial equity, identity, colonialism, and intersectional feminism in an environment built on curiosity, empathy, and community.

🌟 Ethos Lab: is a youth Innovation Hub in Vancouver delivering in- and after-school interdisciplinary S.T.E.A.M programming to encourage inclusion, acceptance, and representation. Youth involved with Ethọ́s Lab are empowered with core skills and self-belief to pursue innovative post-secondary education and career paths and emerge as leaders in our societies.

🌟 Black Business Association of BC: The Black Business Association of BC (BBABC) is a non-profit org dedicated to supporting Black entrepreneurs and businesses through education, business development, market access, mentorship, strategic partnerships for sustainable growth. Founded in 2020, BBABC was established to address barriers faced by Black entrepreneurs while creating an ecosystem where businesses can access the resources needed to start, grow and scale. While rooted in BC, BBABC’s work has expanded beyond the province.

🌟John Howard Society’s mission has evolved beyond correctional reform to include housing, employment, mental health, education, and social inclusion. Working directly with individuals, families, and communities through housing, employment, training, justice, and inclusion programs, their initiatives provide practical support while promoting dignity, belonging, and stability.

🔥We’re bringing BALLROOM to the Resurgence!

Join us at 5pm on Saturday for two community-oriented workshops celebrating Black, q***r, trans, and ballroom culture. Presented in partnership with BlackOut Collective and the Vancouver Ballroom Arts Society, this is an opportunity to learn and witness ballroom culture and how it exists as a living archive of the Black Q***r community’s expression and resilience.
