Why the delays? Communities have already done years of work to shape the future of Northeast False Creek in ways that have been lauded not just here in Vancouver, but around the world. Now the City needs to use the planning tools available to keep that work moving and make sure the commitments in the plan actually reach the people they were meant to serve.

The Northeast False Creek Plan was approved in 2018. It promised major changes for this part of Vancouver, including viaduct removal, new housing, public space, cultural redress, and community-serving development. Years later, communities connected to Hogan’s Alley, Chinatown, False Creek, and the Downtown Eastside are still waiting for the core commitments to move forward.

What we are asking for is clear delivery on what was already approved: a funded and committed timeline for viaduct removal, the completion of planning and rezoning work needed to unlock housing and public space, the delivery of promised community benefits including affordable housing and cultural infrastructure, and a transparent, accountable process that keeps communities meaningfully involved in every stage of implementation.

Our next Story of Impact continues with another incredible Black Strathcona Neighbourhood local, Ernie King! The story of Ernie King is one of community building and a whole lot of tunes 🎶

➡️ Ernie King knew that if Black musicians and performers were shut out of local stages, he would have to build the stage himself. Swipe through to discover how one man’s vision turned exclusion into opportunity for generations of Black artists to come.

After returning from the Second World War, Ernie formed the jazz band Five Guys Named Moe — and when venues refused to book them, he opened the Harlem Nocturne, Vancouver’s only Black-owned and operated nightclub. Just over a decade later, he founded The Sepia Players, Vancouver’s first Black theatre company.

Ernie’s story is a testament that philanthropy isn’t only about giving money — it’s about recognizing a need and creating the space for your community to thrive.

Join us for “Invisibilized Intersections”, a panel on culturally informed harm reduction in the midst of a toxic drug crisis, from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 312 Main!
 
2026 marks a decade since the toxic drug supply and overdose crisis was first declared a provincial health emergency in B.C., and the 25th anniversary of International Overdose Awareness Day. Throughout this crisis, harm reduction measures and the efforts of countless frontline workers are critical to saving as many lives as possible, especially within the shared neighbourhood of the Downtown Eastside, Hogan’s Alley, and Chinatown. How does this work intersect with the many racialized communities who are connected to this neighbourhood? Who might be invisibilized in conversations about local drug policy, and who else might still be slipping through the cracks?

We invite you for a panel discussion to learn more about the local intersections between racialized communities and harm reduction, and expanding the conversation on culturally informed ways of practicing harm reduction.

🌍 Celebrate Black Philanthropy Month with Hogan’s Alley Society’s fundraising campaign, !”

Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) is celebrated annually around the world to recognize, amplify, and invest in Black-led giving and community impact. 🌟Founded by Dr. Jacqueline Bouvier Copeland, with roots dating back to 2000, this global movement honours the generations of generosity, mutual aid, and collective care that have continued to strengthen Black communities across the African and Caribbean diaspora.

This August, HAS is proud to join movement with Legacy Through Giving: a month-long fundraising and storytelling campaign exploring the many forms Black philanthropy can take.

🌟WHAT TO EXPECT🌟

Throughout the month, we’ll spotlight inspiring stories of impact from Hogan’s Alley, Metro Vancouver and across the diaspora, honour cultural traditions rooted in collective care, and share how everyday acts of generosity have built stronger, more connected communities for generations.

Our goal is to strengthen and inspire our network of support. So, as we honour these legacies, we invite you all to reflect on one question:

Our first Story of Impact takes us back to Vancouver’s Black Strathcona neighbourhood with the story of Nora Hendrix and the community that came together to build the Fountain Chapel.

➡️ Nora Hendrix knew that if Vancouver’s Black community wanted a permanent place to gather, they would have to build it together. Swipe through to discover how collective organizing helped transform a goal for a permanent place of worship into a lasting community hub.

By 1918, through community organized fundraising suppers, bazaars, and entertainment events, the African Episcopal Fountain Chapel became a reality.
Nora’s story is symbolic of how philanthropy is more than giving-it is showing up together and investing in one another.

🌟OUTDOOR SCREENING ON THE HOGAN’S ALLEY BLOCK 🌟 Come join Hogan’s Alley Society for a free outdoor film screening celebrating Black stories, history, and joy.
 
On Friday, August 28, 2026, we’re inviting you back to People’s Park for an evening under the stars with Black film, storytelling, and community. Bring a blanket, find your spot on the grass, and settle in. 🎞️ This free outdoor screening is the night before our Living Sign Restoration: the last community activation before the Hogan’s Alley Resurgence Festival arrives in September— another chance to gather, connect, and bring life back to this historic block ahead of the bigger celebration to come.
 
Put together in partnership with Fade To Black Entertainment Society, the evening features a curated lineup of seven short films by Black directors, exploring the Black experience across belonging, history, identity, migration, and ancestral memory, and closing out on a note of joy and self-determination.

A seating area will be available toward the back of the space, along with an accessible portable toilet on site. We encourage attendees to bring a blanket or towel to sit on and fully settle into the vibes for the evening.

🍿 Simple concessions — bags of chips and canned pop — will be available for purchase on site.

Our third Co-Share Collective social was one for the books. ☀️🙌🏽

This summer, we threw it all the way back with a 17 Again-themed social, bringing Co-Share Collective members together for an afternoon filled with laughter, connection, and a whole lot of nostalgia.

From dramatic rounds of charades and the lengths people were willing to go to win Musical Cups, to Name That Tune, Filipino catering, and flipping through everyone’s iconic throwback photos, every moment reminded us that community is built just as much through joy as it is through the work we do together. Of course, no nostalgic gathering would be complete without capturing it all on a good ol’ digital camera (as you can tell from the post). 📸

The Co-Share Collective brings together organizations working across Vancouver’s Chinatown and Hogan’s Alley neighbourhoods who are committed to supporting one another through collaboration, shared learning, and collective care. Whether we’re partnering on initiatives, exchanging ideas, or simply making space to connect, these moments strengthen the relationships that make our work possible.

So as much as this afternoon was about games and nostalgia, it was also a reminder that taking time to celebrate one another matters. Thank you to everyone who joined us, brought their energy, and made this year’s summer social such a memorable one. We can’t wait for the next opportunity to come together. ❤️

Every year, BPM brings people together to recognize, amplify, and invest in Black-led giving of all kinds. Pioneered in 2011 by Dr. Jacqueline Bouvier Copeland, the movement grew from a visionary effort by Black women across the diaspora to celebrate African-descent giving and advance funding equity.

This year, Hogan’s Alley Society (HAS) is joining the celebration with Legacy Through Giving—highlighting a selection of stories that show us the many forms Black philanthropy can take.

Last weekend we announced that HAS is seeking volunteers for TWO Community Stewardship Days coming up this August. While our Block Clean-Up is now cancelled, the Living Sign Revitalization (Garden Day) has now been moved to Saturday, August 29th! Full details below:

We’re seeking folks to support the annual revitalization of the “Hogan’s Alley Welcomes You” Sign—a living landmark with deep historical roots. This garden installation, located next to Nora Hendrix Place, has welcomed visitors into the neighbourhood since it first bloomed in 2007 as part of the Hogan’s Alley Memorial Project🪴This is a chance to learn more about the cultural significance of this site while making a tangible impact on the neighbourhood’s wellbeing.
