This show is going to be a party! 🥳 Join us at Performance Works on July 4 for Haleluya Hailu Plays Ethiopia, directed by Feven Kidane – a joyous celebration of Ethiopian culture, history, and sound.

Our entire Performance Works series is powered by some of the best local talent our city has to offer, and we can’t wait to see them take the big stage on Granville Island. Come support your local scene and experience these incredible musicians live! ✨

Drawing from their Ethiopian heritage, haleluya! and feven ፌቨን team up for a night of shared cultural expression that highlights canonical works from the Ethiopian Golden Age of music, through to the popular music of the 1980s and ’90s. Inspired by groups like Dahlak Band and Walias Band, Hailu and Kidane’s septet featuring Shewit Kidane (krar and vocals), Nebyu Yohannes (trombone), John Nicholson (woodwinds), Suin Park (keyboard), and Miles Wong (drums) electrify these classics with a similar ferocity, while giving them a contemporary flair. The Vancouver Playhouse will host two amazing shows for Jazz Fest this year, both celebrating 100 years of jazz legends! 🥳🎉

On June 30, Keyon Harrold celebrates the music of Miles Davis with his show “Foreverland and Songs for Miles.” In 2015, Keyon performed all of Miles Davis’ trumpet parts for the biopic Miles Ahead starring Don Cheadle, earning a Grammy for his work on the film. When it comes to honouring Miles, few artists are more qualified than Keyon. Keyon Harrold

On the other side of the coin, Isaiah Collier celebrates John Coltrane with “Collier Plays Coltrane” on July 1. Rooted in the free jazz experimental realm, Isaiah is a mystic of sound, a devoted student of his craft and culture, and an artist who channels both reverence and innovation through every note. Isaiah "The Black Emperor" Collier

Tony Wilson was a legend in our community and we are very sad to say goodbye to him. ❤️‍🩹 He performed at the majority of our Festivals throughout the last forty years, and his absence will be deeply felt this year. For decades, he helped shape the sound and spirit of creative music in Vancouver through his artistry, collaboration, and mentorship.

Here are some words from someone who knew him well, our Co-Artistic Director Cole Schmidt: “Tony Wilson gave us a tremendous amount of music and was an endless source of inspiration for our Vancouver scene. His remarkable charge for reaching out and making connection helped us go a little deeper with our own music, with ourselves, and with each other. He taught us the value of checking in and making a point of getting together. We will miss his gift of music and gift of friendship and his giant generous presence. Tony Wilson’s music is for everyone.”
