Our Story: Our founders, Nina and Matt, both worked in homeless shelters in Victoria after completing their undergraduate degrees. One day after a particularly frustrating day at work, Matt commented, "if I won the lottery, the first thing I would do is start a charity to buy everyone clean socks". This comment was the starting point of realizing that such a simple solution could be the answer to
a really big problem! Since moving to Vancouver, Nina and Matt both still work in social services and are closely connected to individuals effected by homelessness every day. The Street Feet Society is the product of watching too many people suffer from foot-related health issues, and knowing a really simple solution is possible. We are passionate about not only creating social change, but inspiring youth to be part of that change too. "Street Feet" is a term used to describe the effect of living outside in an often damp climate that causes feet to become infected, and can lead to many other health issues. Street feet is a very common phenomenon for people affected by homelessness on the west coast. The population living in Vancouver's downtown eastside is currently very affected by this health issue, and a simple solution to the problem would be providing access to clean, dry socks! In 2017 we will be reaching out to schools in the Greater Vancouver Area and support youth to run in-school programs, teaching them about the local epidemic of "Street Feet", and supporting them in creating their own fundraising initiatives. Our goal for the year is to provide 10,000 pairs of socks to people in need! Please feel free to contact us as we continue to develop this new program, and let us know if you want to find a way to become involved! Our Mission:
We empower youth to engage in community initiatives to collect and deliver new socks for individuals affected by homelessness. Our Vision:
A world where youth are socially just members of their communities and the epidemic of foot-related health issues among homeless people no longer exists.
