PPWC Observes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30

https://ppwc.ca/ppwc-observes-national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation-on-september-30/

Every year on September 30, the Public and Private Workers of Canada ( ) marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This critical day, also recognized as Orange Shirt Day, honours the residential school survivors, remembers the thousands of innocent children who never returned home, and supports the families and communities enduring intergenerational trauma. For the PPWC, observing this day goes beyond marking a calendar. It is a solemn renewal of our commitment to social justice and human rights.

From President Chuck LeBlanc and First Vice President Adrian Soldera: "Bill C-39 represents a direct assault on the fundamental rights of working people across Canada. By embedding sweeping Section 107 powers into the Canada Labour Code, this legislation grants a single government minister the unchecked authority to strip away a union’s Charter-protected right to strike. On behalf of the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC), we stand in unyielding opposition to this overreach."

The Crofton pulp mill, a cornerstone of the Vancouver Island economy for generations, was closed by Domtar in April 2026. More than 350 PPWC Local 2 members suddenly faced uncertainty and hardship.

The Public and Private Workers of Canada and then-National President Geoff Dawe took immediate action, producing a House of Commons petition calling on public officials to increase worker transition funding, including relocation funding, increase retirement bridge funding for workers over the age of 55, and extending employment insurance for those affected... On September 26, 2026, Cowichan-Malahat-Langford MP Jeff Kibble read the petition in the House of Commons.

Why PPWC? Real Value for Everyday Workers

Joining PPWC isn't just about having representation—it’s about changing the dynamic on the job floor:

* Better Wages & Financial Security: Unionized positions consistently secure higher pay rates, ensuring workers receive a fair share of the value they generate.

* Comprehensive Benefits: From extended healthcare to reliable pension plans, PPWC advocates for total compensation packages that protect you and your family.

* Health & Safety First: Every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of their shift. PPWC prioritizes rigorous workplace safety standards and provides specialized member training to tackle risks head-on.

* Improved Working Conditions: Say goodbye to unfair treatment and constant micromanagement. A union contract establishes clear rights, reasonable hours, and respectful environment standards.

Beyond individual worksites, PPWC stands at the forefront of broader economic and social justice in BC. True fairness means ensuring every worker has a voice, equal opportunity, and protection against unjust workplace practices. By organizing, working people build the collective power needed to advocate for stronger labour laws, community health, environmental stewardship, and equitable policies across our province.

PPWC is proudly member-driven, meaning democracy starts right on the shop floor—everything flows from the workers up. When you join PPWC, you aren't just signing up for representation; you're gaining a community that equips you with the tools, training, and support to stand up for your rights.
