A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out to Artemis Musicians' Society 's Spotlight on BC concert on March 30th, and to Renz Eulric and Morgan Zentner for making it the amazing event that it was. It was such an honour and a joy to get to know these pieces, to work with these composers, and to ultimately bring these pieces to life. Each and every one was a special experience that brought something unique, and it was incredibly rewarding to bring such a varied and artistically challenging program to a full house of such appreciative audience and community members! You all made us feel safe, loved, and so very much a part of the wider, communal artistic process of creation.
This concert was just the beginning of our relationship to these fantastic works, and we look forward to seeing them further into the world through our future activity. Double reed players, take note! These new pieces belong on YOUR next recitals - and in order of concert appearance, they are:
"Lugar de Fala" (ob/bsn) by Maria-Eduarda Martins
"Tocsin" (ob/bsn) by Jaelem Bhate
"This Breath Between Us" (ob/bsn) by Jennifer Butler
"Voices in the Dark" (eng hrn/bsn) by Nova Pon
"Cane" (ob/eng hrn/bsn) by Bruce A. Russell
"Artemis" (eng hrn/bsn) by Mathieu Lussier
"Lesya's Song" (eng hrn/bsn) by Anna Pidgorna
"Peregrine Felt" (eng hrn/bsn) by Anna Hostman
"The Way it Really Was" (ob/bsn) by Jocelyn Morlock
"Same Here" (eng hrn/bsn) by Jeffrey Ryan
Among the many honours of the evening was the painful, precious and conflicted one of presenting the last piece Jocelyn Morlock ever wrote. She sent it to us just 4 days before she passed away, and on Saturday, an audience heard it for the first time. Of course, the thought that our little commission mattered enough to her to take its place as the last musical offering she made in her life is beyond touching; the more complicated feelings this induces go without saying. My only hope is that our presentation was authentic to her wishes, and captured something of what she was expressing in that moment. We certainly put our hearts into it.
A huge thank you as well to Jade Weekes for taking such wonderful photos of us, and to Jordan Nobles for providing the stills from what will no doubt be a truly genius monument of cinematography 😎.
And perhaps above all, thank you to my wonderful husband, Russell James , for reminding me to eat, and just all-round keeping me alive 😘.
