More people are getting out into BC Parks, and that’s something worth celebrating.

This year, we’re introducing a new way to help make that happen.

Through Spark Grants, and in partnership with Power To Be, individuals with disabilities can now apply to receive support to spend time in parks across BC.

Thanks to our community of support—including Teck and the BC Parks Licence Plate Program—this expansion helps cover the real costs of getting outside, so more people can experience the health, joy, and benefits of time in nature.

Individuals with disabilities can express interest in receiving support to access nature and the outdoors in BC Parks through one of our Spark Grant recipients, Power To Be. Please visit this website to learn more and apply: bit.ly/4nbsGFF

Please note: space and funding are limited. Expressing interest does not guarantee participation, and only those selected for an opportunity will be contacted by Power To Be.

Today, we’re announcing this year’s Spark Grant recipients following record demand for the program, with applications from dozens of community groups across British Columbia seeking support to access BC’s parks.

This year’s recipients include community groups from across the province, each leading their own projects to bring people into BC Parks through community-led experiences:

Fort St John Association For Community Living
Indigenous Women Outdoors
Kamloops Immigrant Services
NatureKids BC
Pacific Immigrant Resources Society
Power to Be
REACH Community Health Centre
Squamish Newcomer Services
YWCA

Entering its fourth year, Spark Grants have supported more than 33,000 participants and enabled over 155,000 hours outdoors in BC’s parks, with more than $600,000 granted to equity-deserving communities.

Spark Grants are supported in part by funding from the BC Parks Licence Plate Program and contribute to BC Parks’ Commitment to Inclusion, a province-wide effort to ensure parks are welcoming and meaningfully accessible to all.

Each year, millions of people visit BC’s provincial parks, but not everyone has the same opportunity to get there. Applications to the Spark program show strong interest from a wide range of communities, including Indigenous peoples, racialized communities, newcomers to Canada, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, people living with disabilities, and youth at risk, among others. These applications reflect a growing demand for park experiences that are inclusive, community-led, and responsive to diverse needs across the province.

A rare and ecologically rich landscape in the South Okanagan is now protected! 🌲

The The Nature Trust of British Columbia has successfully secured the 77-acre Marron River Grasslands, with support from BC Parks Foundation and a community of partners and donors. This site protects one of the province’s most endangered ecosystems, native grasslands, which cover less than 1% of BC but support more species at risk than any other.

The land provides critical habitat for wildlife including American badger, western rattlesnake, Lewis’s woodpecker, and pallid bat, while also supporting a vital stretch of riparian habitat along the Marron River. It plays an important role as winter range for mule deer and helps sustain biodiversity in a region facing increasing pressure.

Protecting places like this takes collaboration. This project reflects what’s possible when organizations, communities, and supporters come together around a shared goal: ensuring these landscapes remain intact and thriving for generations to come.
