As we reflect on history, we must also acknowledge the present—Black communities continue to be disproportionately affected by homelessness. Equity begins with awareness and action. The Hot Potato

The eyes that met mine were different. They reflected a lived experience of hardship and resilience that I only could have noticed by looking into them with deliberate intention.

But I looked away. And that was the most dangerous thing I could do.

Homelessness is our collective reality. We could not—as citizens instilled with the compassion that makes us distinctly Canadian—stand by as homelessness was tossed around as a hot potato in society: ignored and passed on to be “someone else’s problem”.

And so began this project. The Hot Potato Initiative is a non-profit organisation working to educate & engage young Canadians in the conversation about homelessness.
