With the gallery now closed, at memorable exhibitions from the past 10 years.

Rebecca Bair's “The Sun Found Me Amongst the Clouds” featured cyanotype works created with hair monotype processes and with brushes made from hair extensions. An interdisciplinary artist, Bair’s research explores the possibilities of specific representation and identity through abstraction and non-figuration.

With the gallery now closed, at memorable exhibitions from the past 10 years.

Holly Schmidt’s "Quiescence" featured papier-maché sculptures thoughtfully modelled after the flora of the unique ecoregion known as the New Mexican Plateau. The intricate works were grouped together in clusters and suspended from the gallery ceiling in what Schmidt has referred to as a 'flipped topography’.

With the gallery now closed, at memorable exhibitions from the past 10 years.

Karen Zalamea's 2018 exhibition, "When the sun rises, we keep the fire aflame," explored iconic American landscapes from Yellowstone National Park to Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats. Zalamea reflected on what a photograph can be, pushing the images from a flat two-dimensional pictorality into objecthood—some framed and hung on the wall, but others cut and collaged, or presented as sculptural works.

Through bold colour and large-scale abstraction, Russna Kaur's "Suddenly her lips sharpened - it was splendid." spoke to her identity as a Canadian of Punjabi diaspora. From the lengths of vibrant fabric in her mother’s Indian clothing boutique to the saturated tones of community festivals and ceremonies, Kaur’s paintings referenced the immersive, overwhelming experiences of colour that shaped her childhood.

"Line as Language," Shawn Hunt's 2016 BAF exhibition, used the traditional northwest coast design principle known as formline to create abstract, surreal, and sculptural paintings based on ancestral Heiltsuk Cosmology.

With the gallery now closed, at memorable exhibitions from the past 10 years.

Brendan Lee Satish Tang's "meatspace" opened in the gallery in January of 2018. The exhibition’s title was from a term coined by John Perry Barlow to differentiate the physical world from the virtual world of “cyberspace.” Tang described the sculptures as cloud formations, recalling the angular “low polygon” shapes of early 3D computer graphics.

There are just 4 days left to see Karice Mitchell's "Intimacy Is." Mitchell’s practice considers issues surrounding the representation of the Black femme body. Through various modes of abstraction, she endeavours to give agency to her photographic subjects while disrupting the white gaze.

The exhibition features a suite of new works created during the artist’s summer residency at BAF, and sees her venture, for the first time, in front of the camera, scanning her own body.
