BC Health Coalition The BC Health Coalition builds power to champion evidence-based improvements to public health care

The BC Health Coalition champions a strong public health care system that is there for all of us when we need it. We are a democratic, inclusive and consensus-based community of individuals and organizations that span the province of British Columbia. Together we advocate for evidence-based improvements to our public health care system, stimulate public education on health care issues, and drive positive change to our health care system through campaigns across the province.

Rising heat. Rising risk. Rising urgency.

Climate change is already reshaping life in our province. Over the past decade, we’ve seen record-breaking wildfires, heat domes, droughts, and water shortages alongside increasingly frequent flooding and atmospheric rivers.

The economic and environmental costs are enormous. But what does this mean for our health and our health care system?

Now is the time to come together.

Join Voices for Public Health Care for an important conversation with physicians from the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE). They are on the front lines, seeing firsthand how climate change is affecting health across our province.

Let’s listen. Let’s act. Let’s build a health care system and a future ready for this moment.

Yesterday in Vancouver, something important happened.

In the rain, under red umbrellas, health care workers and advocates stood together and raised their voices.

And it worked.

Our pressure forced the Liberal government to respond.

Participants called on MP Hedy Fry, as Chair of the Standing Committee on Health, to defend and enforce the Canada Health Act as Alberta moves ahead with Bill 11. This legislation would allow doctors to bill patients directly and expand private insurance.

After hearing from speakers, Fry confirmed:
“There is no doubt that Bill 11 contravenes the Canada Health Act.”

She also warned about the risks a two-tier system poses to equity and access.

That matters.

But no clear federal action was outlined.

Instead, Canadians are being told negotiations are happening behind closed doors.

That is not enough.

We need enforcement, not delay or silence.

We cannot stand by while the fate of universal public health care hangs in the balance.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
Break the Silence.
Stop Alberta’s Two-Tier Health Care Plan.

Alberta’s new legislation opens the door to U.S.-style, for-profit medicine, threatening the universal single-payer system Canadians fought to build. And so far, the federal government seems willing to stay silent rather than confront it.

But political silence only works if the issue stays quiet.

That’s why health coalitions across the country are organizing rallies at MPs’ constituency offices and asking a simple question: Will our MPs break the silence and stand up to U.S.-style two-tier health care?

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
Break the Silence.
Stop Alberta’s Two-Tier Health Care Plan.

📍 Where:
Constituency Office of MP Hedy Fry
Standing Committee on Health
112–1030 Denman Street

🕤 When:
9:30 A.M.
Monday, March 16

Alberta has passed legislation that creates US style two-tier health care.

That means:
💳 Credit cards and private insurance replacing health cards.
🏥opens the door to the American for-profit health care industry

This directly undermines the core promise of the Canada Health Act: care based on need not the ability to pay.

And while this happens, the federal government has remained silent, despite its responsibility to enforce the Canada Health Act.

Many Canadians don’t yet realize what’s at stake.

That’s why we’re rallying at MPs’ offices across the country.

We are asking our elected representatives:

Will the end of universal public health care be met with government silence?

public health care belongs to all of us.

And it will take all of us to defend it.

Austerity on the Front Lines: Health Care Workers and Rural Patients at Risk

The Finance Minister called it “not an austerity budget.”

But for rural and remote communities, there is no relief in sight.

In health care, a marginal budget increase over multiple years effectively means a cut in services. Fewer supports. Longer waits. Greater strain on workers and patients alike.

Join us for The Provincial Budget: Rural Care at Risk, a timely conversation on what the BC Budget will mean to rural residents.

Rural communities deserve better.
Health care workers deserve better.
Patients deserve better.
