Each week, a group of around 15 participants gathers for music therapy sessions at Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre that have become a meaningful and anticipated part of their routine. As the session begins, the room quickly fills with smiles, setting the tone for an engaging and uplifting experience.
Tobias, a caregiver who participates in two programs supported by Music Heals funds, shared a powerful reflection on the broader impact of music therapy:
“Marsha and I are participating in the Musical Journey, and through that program, and the very effective result of mixing social and music, we were able to pull ourselves out of a sadness and social isolation that came from navigating dementia and dementia care. The benefits were profound in changing our daily lives.
Day-to-day care evolved into participation with many other programs. It really got us out of our shells. We now go to Memory Cafe as well, which also has a musical component along with arts and crafts. Lorna, our music therapist, occasionally instructs in that program, and her familiar and fun style makes it enjoyable, too.”
