We’re excited to announce the launch of our new monthly newsletter — a new way to stay connected to the impact of music therapy across British Columbia and Canada.

Each month, we’ll share stories from the programs we fund, community updates, special events, campaign highlights, and meaningful moments that showcase the power of music therapy in action.

From celebrating milestones to spotlighting the people and programs behind our mission, this newsletter is a closer look at the growing Music Heals community and the impact your support makes possible.

Listening to older, familiar songs can strongly activate memory and emotion. Music therapy often uses songs from a person’s youth because the brain areas that store musical memories are relatively preserved, even when other types of memory fade. 🎹

That’s why someone who struggles to remember names or recent events may still be able to sing along perfectly to songs they loved decades ago — the music taps into deep, long-term memory and can even improve mood and communication.

Music therapy can take many forms depending on a person’s needs, goals, and stage of life. Whether someone is seeking comfort, connection, emotional expression, or cognitive rehabilitation, music therapists use a range of approaches to meet people where they are. Here are three impactful ways music therapy is often practiced.

From listening and reflection to active participation, music therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Its versatility is part of what makes it so powerful - adapting to people across all ages, abilities, and life circumstances to support healing in deeply personal ways.

Each week, a group of around 15 participants gathers for music therapy sessions at Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre that have become a meaningful and anticipated part of their routine. As the session begins, the room quickly fills with smiles, setting the tone for an engaging and uplifting experience.

Tobias, a caregiver who participates in two programs supported by Music Heals funds, shared a powerful reflection on the broader impact of music therapy:

“Marsha and I are participating in the Musical Journey, and through that program, and the very effective result of mixing social and music, we were able to pull ourselves out of a sadness and social isolation that came from navigating dementia and dementia care. The benefits were profound in changing our daily lives.

Day-to-day care evolved into participation with many other programs. It really got us out of our shells. We now go to Memory Cafe as well, which also has a musical component along with arts and crafts. Lorna, our music therapist, occasionally instructs in that program, and her familiar and fun style makes it enjoyable, too.”

Music therapy meets people where they’re at 🎶

Whether through songwriting, listening, improvisation, or conversation, music therapy creates space for connection, expression, and support — no musical background required.

As an evidence-based healthcare profession, music therapy supports individuals across mental health care, rehabilitation, hospitals, senior care, and beyond. 💛

The students at CABE Secondary have renamed the music therapy program “Rock Band”.

The Rock Band program runs every Wednesday from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m helping students overcome mid-week burnout. Without funding support from Music Heals, the school could only afford the musical therapist for half the year.

The funding from Music Heals makes it possible to run the Rock Band program until the third week of June. June can be a stressful time of year for various reasons, and the school noticed a sense of lightness in the building by continuing the program for students who need the outlet. They are even able to take advantage of any nicer weather and utilize the outdoor classroom for Rock Band sessions, allowing our students and staff to enjoy getting outdoors and connecting through music.
