New guidance is available to help supportive housing and emergency shelter providers strengthen workplace safety.

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control has released guidance to help providers assess and manage worker exposure to unregulated substances. It covers site-specific risk assessments, ventilation and engineering controls, administrative measures, personal protective equipment, and harm-reduction considerations.

Importantly, the guidance emphasizes balancing worker safety with the health considerations of residents.

Non-profit housing providers are encouraged to review the guidance and consider how their existing policies, training and safety procedures align with the recommendations.

Construction is underway on a new BC Housing development in Courtenay that will provide 70 supportive housing units and a 73 emergency shelter beds for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
