Vancouver Tenants Union

Vancouver Tenants Union Bringing together the collective power of people from every neighbourhood for real rent control, tenant protections & better income and housing for all!

Vancouver Tenants Union (VTU) will bring tenants together to fight for better housing. Everyone (regardless of class, lifestyle, ability, age, gender, race, sexuality, or citizenship) deserves a safe, secure, and affordable home. Vancouver tenants are 50% of the population, are often isolated and at risk of being pushed out of their homes. The VTU will support tenants to learn their rights and sta

nd up to their landlords, developers and politicians (who are often the same people) who put their housing at risk. WE DEMAND:
-REAL RENT CONTROL
-EVICTION PROTECTIONS
-MORE HOUSING AND BETTER INCOMES FOR ALL

Our goals:
*To support a contact person or Tenant Organizer in every rental building in the city
*Create a force of renters with 1000s of dues paying members
*Change policy to benefit tenants
*Organize tenants to protect them from threats, intimidation and bribes that lead to the loss of their homes. The Vancouver Tenants Union is volunteer-led and membership supported. We are only as strong as our members. Thank you for joining the renters movement!

---
We acknowledge that we are organizing, living, and resisting on unceded Coast Salish territories, specifically of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations. We recognize that displacement and gentrification are part of the larger colonial and capitalist systems that occupy these lands. Fighting for tenants rights, is a fight for housing justice for all. No more displacement on stolen Native land!

Three long term tenants from the Myron Manor Collective speak about organizing with their neighbours, the power of the union and the shady City policy being used to justify their displacement. Send a letter now to support these tenants at DefendMountPleasant.ca link in our bio!

TAKE ACTION NOW TO DEFEND YOUR NEIGHBOURS!

Stand with the Myron Manor Collective tenants in the fight to save their homes.

City Staff are recommending the approval of a rezoning at 75 East 8th for a 21-story extended stay hotel. Their reasoning is that the Myron Manor apartment building is situated in designated industrial zoning and is not intended for residential use.

The developers of this project are Lotus Capital Corp and Nicola Wealth. They have billions of dollars in holdings, with services catering to “ultra-high-net-worth” clients.

If approved this project will replace the homes of people who have lived here for decades with short-term housing for employees working at Vancouver’s “booming high-tech and biotech firms.”

We choose the future of our community and our neighbours over the investments of the ultra rich!

Support these tenants by sending a letter to the City and the Developers stating your opposition to this hotel. 📨

We're calling on the City to REFUSE this rezoning ❌
We're calling on Nicola Wealth and Lotus Capital corp to CANCEL this project ❌

This building and the homes here must stay! No evictions for the sake of investments for the ultra-rich. NO EVICTIONS PERIOD!

The tenants of 75 East 8th Ave have formed the Myron Manor Collective in order to fight for their homes!

Nicola Wealth Real Estate and Lotus Capital Corp have applied to rezone and demolish Myron Manor, at 75 E 8th Ave for a 21-storey extended-stay hotel. This is meant to provide short-term housing for remote tech workers and digital nomads.

This proposal threatens to destroy the homes of seniors, people with disabilities, an Indigenous elder, immigrants from all over the world, and young families. Some have lived here for decades. Some their entire lives. Many would likely have to leave the city or the province entirely.

This hotel will include “apartment-style living,” yet the tenants will not be entitled to move back into the new building like other projects within the Broadway Plan area.

This development would forever change the character of Mount Pleasant. It would displace a community of Filipino immigrants who call Myron Manor home, just minutes away from the proposed Filipino Cultural Centre.

Lotus Capital Corp and Nicola Wealth’s services cater to “ultra-high-net-worth” clients, with investments in the $20 million range and higher. We demand that the city prioritize the future of our community and our neighbours over the investments of the ultra rich!

As more and more tenants face demoviction under the Broadway Plan, they are meeting a new type of consultants: Tenant Relocations Specialists. VTU presents a guide to who these people are, whose interests they serve (spoiler: it’s not tenants) and how to protect yourself and your neighbours.

On Thursday, April 9th, members of the Vancouver Tenants Union (VTU) held a press conference & rally outside of landlord Andrzej Kowalski’s workplace, in response to Kowalski’s retaliatory lawsuit against the union for successfully organizing against two illegal eviction attempts.

The event marks 4 months since the VTU launched its Teach Landlords a Lesson (TLAL) campaign, which has raised over $22,000 of our $35,000 goal. Over 45 people attended the rally outside Kowalski’s office, hoisting banners made by members at a recent art build.

Our union is calling on all our allies, friends, supporters and comrades to: (1) get involved in the campaign, (2) join your local chapter, or (3) host a fundraiser to help defend the VTU.

As member & campaign organizer Tyler Work said: “We are determined to counter this unjust attack on our union with a campaign to show Kowalski and any other landlord that when they go after us, we get stronger. We will continue to defend our homes.”

Dave Hamm from and Paul Henry from share their perspectives on BC's Bill 11 as supportive housing tenants. Why is this government refusing to consult or engage with the people directly affected by their policies?
