🇺🇬 Happy Independence Day, Uganda! 🇺🇬
Today, Uganda in BC Social Society celebrates 64 years of independence and the people, cultures, and traditions that connect us across generations and borders.

From Uganda to British Columbia, we carry our heritage with pride through our languages, music, food, stories, and care for one another. Together, we honour our roots, strengthen our community, and inspire the next generation.
May this day renew our commitment to unity, peace, and opportunity for all.

Today, September 30, the Uganda Social Society in BC observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

We honour residential school Survivors, the children who never returned home, and their families and communities.

As members of the African diaspora living on Indigenous lands, we have a responsibility to learn the histories of the places we call home. Our experiences can inspire solidarity while we make space for the distinct histories, rights, and voices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

How can we be part of the change?

🧡 Listen to Survivors and learn from Indigenous voices.

🧡 Teach our children about residential schools through age-appropriate, Indigenous-created resources.

🧡 Support Indigenous-led organizations, businesses, and community initiatives.

🧡 Challenge racism and misinformation in our everyday conversations.

🧡 Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and choose an action to carry forward.

🧡 Wear orange today. Keep learning and taking action throughout the year.

Reconciliation grows through the relationships we build and the commitments we keep.

To everyone who came out to support the Kwetu Cultural Festival 2026—THANK YOU!

Thank you to our families, community members, performers, artists, vendors, volunteers, sponsors, partners, Elders, speakers, organizers, and every person who brought their energy, culture, stories, music, food, laughter, and love to Kwetu.

You helped make this festival more than an event—you made it a true celebration of culture, connection, belonging, and community.
From the performances and conversations to the food, dancing, drumming, vendors, and beautiful moments shared throughout the festival, we are so grateful to have experienced it with you.

Kwetu means ""home"—and this weekend, we created home together. ❤️
Thank you for showing up. Thank you for celebrating with us. Thank you for supporting our vision.
