Famee Furlane of Vancouver

Famee Furlane of Vancouver Promote Friulan customs and culture, work as a gathering point for all the people interested in Italian food and Italian culture!

The Famee Furlane of Vancouver was founded in 1958 by a group of mostly young immigrants to Canada from the Region of Friuli in Northern Italy. The goal was to have a society where Furlans could gather socially in order to maintain, enjoy and promote their family values, culture and traditions. It was also important that as immigrants in a new country, a network for information and help be available to anyone needing such services, as they assimilated into Canadian society.

🇮🇹☀️ Today, Italy practically stops.

The beaches are packed.

The cities are quieter.

Tables are being set for lunches that may last half the afternoon.

And across Italy you’ll hear two words everywhere:

BUON FERRAGOSTO! 🇮🇹

Today, August 15, is Ferragosto—one of the most beloved days of the Italian summer.

But here’s the fascinating part…

Italians have essentially been celebrating an August holiday for more than 2,000 years.

The name Ferragosto comes from the Latin Feriae Augusti, meaning the “rest” or holidays of Augustus, associated with Emperor Augustus and a period of festivities and respite from agricultural work in ancient Rome.

There were celebrations, feasts and horse races—and even working animals could be given a break and decorated with flowers.

More than two millennia later, apparently Italy has retained one particularly important Roman tradition:

Nobody should be working too hard in August. 😂

Over the centuries, Ferragosto became associated with August 15, which is also the Catholic Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and remains an official public holiday throughout Italy. (Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri)

Today, Ferragosto looks a little different depending on where you are.

🏖️ At the coast, beaches fill with families and friends.

⛰️ In the mountains, Italians escape the summer heat for picnics and scampagnate.

🍝 Around the table, families gather for long Ferragosto lunches.

⛪ In towns and villages, centuries-old religious processions honor the Assumption.

🎆 And when darkness falls, many communities celebrate with festivals, music and fireworks.

There’s even an interesting chapter behind the classic Ferragosto getaway. In the 1930s, discounted “people’s trains” helped ordinary Italians travel to the sea, mountains and other cities, strengthening the tradition of the Ferragosto gita fuori porta that remains part of Italian summer culture today. (ITALY Magazine)

So if you’re in Italy today and wondering why the pace suddenly feels different…

This is Ferragosto.

A little Ancient Rome.

A little Catholic tradition.

A lot of food.

Probably a beach.

Definitely family and friends.

And absolutely no reason to rush. 🇮🇹❤️

After more than 2,000 years, Italians may have perfected something the rest of us are still trying to learn:

Sometimes life is meant to be enjoyed—not scheduled.

🇮🇹 BUON FERRAGOSTO from Tutto Italiano!

Now tell us…

If you could spend Ferragosto ANYWHERE in Italy today, where would you be? ⛰️🏖️🍋🇮🇹
