Coastal First Nations

Coastal First Nations The Coastal First Nations is an alliance of First Nations on British Columbia’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii.

The Great Bear Initiative was created with the conviction that if a conservation-based economy is to succeed, our active and meaningful participation is essential. We believe that the people who best know, use, and protect biodiversity are the First Nations people who live in these magnificent forests and waters. Our experience has taught us that strong and thriving Coastal First Nations cultures,

with recognition of our Aboriginal Title and Rights to our lands, is the key to a conservation-based economy in our Traditional Territories.

There's a new community band store and cafe coming to Klemtu! 🥳 The Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation is opening a new enlarged shopping facility that will service mariners travelling up and down the coast. The new facility, 1/3 larger than the previous store, will offer hot meals, coffee, expanded groceries and Wi-Fi, and will be open as of June 29.

“With our modern First Nations Fuel station and the new store just steps away, captains can now manage refueling, grocery provisioning, and crew dining in a single, efficient stop.”

Congrats to the Kitasoo Xai'xais Development Corporation on this huge accomplishment!

A huge step toward a sustainable future and a initiative that should be replicated in remote communities across Canada and beyond.

In Canada, over 80% of British Columbia's energy is generated by hydropower.

But off the Pacific Coast, Haida Gwaii’s archipelago is disconnected from B.C.’s electrical grid. The islands are one of about 44 remote communities in B.C. that rely on diesel for their power.

B.C. is aware of its need to move away from diesel. In 2017, the province announced its goal to reduce diesel usage by 80% on remote grids. Unfortunately, the 2030 goal remains far out of reach.

This past December, Tll Yahda Energy, an independent power producer, partnered with the Council of the Haida Nation, Skidegate Band Council, and Old Massett Village Council, on a solar project named Solar North.

The Haida Gwaii's shift toward solar energy marks the first time in B.C. history that solar has made a sizable dent in a diesel-driven remote grid.

Leaders from the Wuikinuxv, Nuxalk, Kitasoo Xai'xais, Heiltsuk, Gitxaała, and Gitga’at Nations, along with Canada and British Columbia, have signed a collaborative agreement to establish a new National Marine Conservation Area Reserve (NMCAR). The Nations have simultaneously declared an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) that shares the same footprint and name.

Mia-yaltwa Ha’lidzogm hoon (“Realm of the Salmon, Home of the Salmon”) provides for 6,700 square kilometres of coastal waters!
