New on the Blog!

“I know that you are in a deep dark hole right now. But, when you’re ready to climb out, remember, there are people who love you and are waiting for you.”

Dr. Lynn Farrales shares on our blog how she processed her grief for her daughter through rock climbing, describing how climbing improved her self-compassion and trust in her own body. Thank you, Lynn, for your vulnerability and courage in sharing your story with our community.

🦋Registration for the 8th Annual Butterfly Run opens soon! 🦋

Save the date for the 2026 Butterfly Run! Registration for the annual Butterfly Run on Saturday, October 3rd, is opening soon. This year we are hosting 6 locations across BC: Vancouver, Whistler, Okanagan, Nanaimo, Kamloops, and Trail.

Join us at our annual memorial 5K run / 3K walk event to raise awareness for pregnancy loss, TFMR, infant loss, and infertility. This event is in partnership with the BC Women’s Health Foundation. The funds raised from the Butterfly Run allow us to provide essential resources for families across BC navigating loss and infertility such as counselling, support groups, peer support, resources for local hospitals, and so much more.

Whether you’re a first-time or returning participant, we’d love you to join us at any of these locations on Saturday, October 3rd in honour of your baby, your journey, or in support of someone you love.
Mark your calendar! Registration opens on May 29th!

Over the past two years, Butterfly Support Network has been advocating for legislation in BC focused on improving research, care, support, and resources for families experiencing pregnancy loss and infant loss.

Today, our petition with 770 signatures was presented to the BC Legislative Assembly, calling on the government to establish legislation around pregnancy and infant loss, including:
• increased research & data collection on pregnancy loss and infant loss
• improved bereavement training and support for care providers
• expanded programs and resources for individuals experiencing pregnancy loss and infant loss

Thank you to every person who signed this petition, or helped to collect signatures from your friends and family. We appreciate and value the collective effort of our community - we could not have done this without you.

A heartfelt thank you to MLA Jennifer Blatherwick for introducing us and sharing a statement about the impact of Butterfly Support Network and our bereavement support programs. We were also very grateful to meet with the BC Minister of Health Josie Osbourne to discuss both the strengths and ongoing challenges in bereavement care across BC.

Thank you to Nick & Laura, bereaved parents to Makayla, Erin Sowerby Greene, bereaved mother to Briar, and Kim Lockhart, bereaved mother to Wilder who all travelled to Victoria today on behalf of Butterfly Support Network and who continue to show up with love, courage, and commitment in honour of all our babies. 🦋

Today, we’re holding space for the mothers who have lost a baby or a child. Bereaved Mother’s Day can feel complicated in ways that are hard to put into words. No one chooses this path. No one dreams of becoming a bereaved mother. It’s a love and a grief that live side by side, and are carried for a lifetime. And some days, you might wish you didn’t have to carry it. If your family includes a baby or child the world cannot see, this day is for you.
We see you.
We honour you.
You are, and always will be, their mother.
If you feel up to it, we invite you to share your baby’s name below. We would be honoured to remember them with you today 🤍

"Fertility struggles can be one of the most emotionally and physically challenging journeys a person can face. If you are going through this, please know you are not alone. Your feelings are valid, your grief is real, and your hope matters too."

"I once read a quote that gave me hope, hope that fertility and the ‘what if’s’ wouldn’t always hang over me, they wouldn’t always be a weight on my shoulders, or they wouldn’t always be something that would occupy space in my mind. Although I cannot recall or find the exact quote, it read something like this ‘I have come to a time where I don’t think about fertility every moment and it is freeing, and one day you will have that too’. It was a quote that was so simple, nothing profound but it made me realize that this could be me one day."

In honour of Canadian Fertility Awareness Week, BSN board member Kelly Townsend shares her story on our blog, opening up about her journey through infertility, pregnancy loss, IVF and finding peace after her fertility journey. Thank you, Kelly for your vulnerability and courage in sharing your journey with our community ✨ Read the full post on the blog, linked in bio.

“I’m just another woman living in British Columbia. But behind the scenes, I’m quietly navigating the hardest storm I’ve ever faced, If you saw me at the coffee shop or the gym, you’d never know the effort put into keeping things together. You see, my husband and I have been trying to conceive for far longer than I’d like to admit. Instead of the life we’ve imagined, I’ve faced pregnancy loss, painful invasive tests, and unsuccessful treatments."

This Canadian Fertility Awareness Week (April 19–25), we’re honoured to share Hilary Walton’s story.

Hilary bravely opens up about the realities of infertility, the pregnancy loss, the invasive treatments, and the emotional, mental, physical, and financial toll that so often goes unseen.
By sharing her story, Hilary is helping to break the silence and reduce the stigma surrounding fertility struggles and family building. Thank you, Hilary, for your courage and vulnerability.

Read Hilary's full blog post on our website, and join us this week as we continue to share real journeys, resources, and support.

"A few years ago, I didn’t know anyone who experienced pregnancy or child loss in my network. My friends were all having kids in their mid to late 30’s successfully, so I didn’t really put much thought into it being a challenge.”

Today, in honour of Canadian Fertility Awareness Week, Kim Smith shares her story on our blog, opening up about her journey through infertility, pregnancy loss, and navigating antiphospholipid syndrome.
Stories like Kim’s remind us how much can live beneath the surface, and how important it is to bring these experiences into the light.

Thank you, Kim, for your vulnerability and courage in sharing your story with our community ✨ Read the full post on our blog here:
