Today, we celebrate the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, one of the two patron saints of our ancient Craft.
As we mark the winter solstice, we reflect on the Evangelist’s message of brotherly love, light, and charity. Just as he represents the "Gentle Saint" of Masonry, we use this day to reaffirm our commitment to supporting one another and our communities.
To all Brethren celebrating this ancient feast, may your labors be fruitful and your bonds of friendship ever-strengthening.
Happy St. John’s Day! 📐⚖️☀️

Lest We Forget. Mount Hermon Lodge conducted its first Vacant Chair Ceremony last night which was a solemn and moving experience for all.

This ceremony dates back to 1875 where masonic lodges in the USA wanted to honor their brothers who died during the civil war, that had ended a decade before. The masons of Australia and New Zealand developed their ceremony in 1922 to honor the brethren of their two lodges who died at the battle of Gallipoli.

Special thanks to our Junior Warden who created a beautiful multimedia tribute to the fallen veterans of the Great War.

THE MOSAIC PAVEMENT

The Masonic tradition is that the floor of the Temple of Solomon was decorated with a mosaic pavement of black and white stones. Samuel Lee, in his diagram of the Temple, represents not only the floors of the building, but of all the outer courts, as covered with such a pavement. The Masonic idea was perhaps first suggested by this passage in the Gospel of Saint John xix, 13, "When Pilate, therefore, heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment-seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha." The word here translated Pavement is in the original Lithostroton, the very word used by Pliny to denote a mosaic pavement.

The Greek word, as well as its Latin equivalent is used to denote a pavement formed of ornamental stones of various colors, precisely what is meant by a Mosaic Pavement. There was, therefore, a part of the Temple which was decorated with a mosaic pavement. The Talmud informs us that there was such a pavement in the Conclave where the Grand Sanhedrin held its sessions. By a little torsion of historical accuracy, the Freemasons have asserted that the ground floor of the Temple was a mosaic pavement, and hence as the Lodge is a representation of the Temple, that the floor of the Lodge should also be of the same pattern. The mosaic pavement is an old symbol of the Order. It is met with in the earliest Rituals of the eighteenth century. It is classed among the ornaments of the Lodge in combination with the indented tassel and the blazing star. Its parti-colored stones of black and white have been readily and appropriately interpreted as symbols of the evil and good of human life.

Happy St. John's Day to all our Brethren!

SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

One of the Patron Saints of Freemasonry, and at one time, indeed, the only one, the name of Saint John the Evangelist having been introduced subsequent to the sixteenth century. His festival occurs on the 24th of June, and is very generally celebrated by the Masonic Fraternity. Dalcho (Ahiman Rezon, page 150) says that "the stern integrity of Saint John the Baptist, which induced him to forego every minor consideration in discharging the obligations he owed to God; the unshaken firmness with which he met martyrdom rather than betray his duty to his Master; his steady reproval of vice, and continued preaching of repentance and virtue. make him a fit patron of the Masonic institution." The Charter of Cologne says: "We celebrate, annually, the memory of Saint John, the Forerunner of Christ and the Patron of our Community." The Knights Hospitaler also dedicated their Order to him; and the ancient expression of our ritual, which speaks of a "Lodge of the Holy Saint John of Jerusalem," refers to the same saint.

It is worthy of note that the Grand Lodge of England was revived on Saint John the Baptist's Day in 1717, and that the Annual Feast was kept on that day until 1725, when it was held for the first time on the Festival of the Evangelist . Scottish Freemasons always kept the festival of the Baptist until 1737, when the Grand Lodge changed the time of the annual election to Saint Andrew's Day.

Happy St. John's Day!

The early adoption of The Holy Saints’ John into Freemasonry as patron Saints provides a balance or equilibrium in Masonic thought and ritual. While very different men with different religious practices, St. John the Baptist’s more strict and rigid moral code compliments the more philosophical and esoteric work of St. John the Evangelist.

Both June 24 and December 27 are widely accepted as remembrance and recognition days to both The Holy Saints’ John. Celebrations include feasts, processions, and formal regalia. The Holy Saints’ John are often seen as metaphorical pillars of Freemasonry, with St. John the Baptist representing the pillar beneath the Earth, and St. John the Evangelist as the pillar beneath the heavens.

“Brotherly love, relief & truth.”

Mount Hermon Lodge No. 7 was established as the first Masonic Lodge on Burrard Inlet on January 11 1869 and is still thriving today.

Receiving its charter from the Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1869, Mt. Hermon Lodge No. 7 is a Constituent Lodge of the Grand Lodge of British Columbia and Yukon. This means it is one of only a handful of historic lodges in our grand jurisdiction that predates the Grand Lodge of BC & Yukon itself not to mention the province and territory.

Mount Hermon Lodge meets on the first Tuesday evening of every month with the exception of January, July and August. We also hold numerous social events throughout the year that our friends and family join us for.
