It was a big day for BC’s life sciences sector, with nearly $100 million in federal funding announced for BC-based companies Kardium and Evonik Canada.

The funding includes up to $31.25 million for Kardium’s manufacturing facility in Burnaby and up to $68 million for Evonik Canada to expand its operations in BC, including a new Nucleic Acid Competence Centre. Read more.

The federal government also announced more than $541 million in research funding through the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs program, aimed at bringing leading researchers from around the world to Canada.

Minister Joly highlighted researchers from MIT and Harvard who have already made the move to Canada, including researchers joining U of T and UBC.

Exciting ! Response Biomedical is bringing BC health innovation to space with its RAMP® technology at the heart of ACTIS (Acute Care Testing in Space).

Selected by the Canadian Space Agency, ACTIS is a portable testing device designed to help assess an astronaut’s risk of developing blood clots while onboard the International Space Station. The technology can analyze a small blood sample and provide results quickly, giving astronauts and medical teams important health information during a mission.

Testing medical technology in space also provides valuable insights into how healthcare can be delivered in environments where access to hospitals and laboratories is limited.

This exciting milestone highlights how BC-developed technology is helping support astronaut health today while contributing to the future of healthcare in space.

Great News, a new chapter is taking shape in personalized cancer care! Moderna and Merck have reported promising Phase 3 results for a personalized mRNA therapy combined with KEYTRUDA to treat patients with high-risk melanoma after surgery.

Tested in 1,137 patients, the combination helped patients stay cancer-free longer and reduced the risk of cancer spreading compared with KEYTRUDA alone. Intismeran is uniquely designed using the specific mutations found in each patient’s tumour, helping train the immune system to recognize and fight their cancer. The results mark the first positive Phase 3 findings for an individualized mRNA-based cancer therapy.

“For many years, the idea of creating an mRNA treatment designed specifically for an individual patient’s cancer was aspirational. We are now helping turn that vision into a reality,” said Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna.

The findings highlight the growing potential of combining personalized mRNA technology with immunotherapy to create more targeted approaches to cancer care.
