Why do the cities getting active transportation right so often have women at the helm?

That's the question at the center of our latest Bike Sense episode with Melissa Bruntlett — a Vancouver-raised cycling advocate now based in Delft, and co-author of the new book Women Changing Cities.

Melissa and Peter dig into a lot in this one: what she noticed on a recent trip back to Vancouver after six years away, why school streets tend to be the easiest sell for safer-streets advocates, and how the Netherlands went from car-choked streets in the 1970s to the cycling nation we know today — sparked by a grassroots movement after over 400 children were killed in traffic in a single year.

There's also a great story here about what changes for kids when they can move around a city independently — something any parent who's ever done bike-lane advocacy for their own sanity will relate to.

Give it a listen and let us know what stood out to you.🚲 Melissa & Chris Bruntlett

Roy Symons would rather have no bike lanes that the constant threat of getting "doored" by a car.

This week, Roy Symons from joins us BikeSense to discuss just whether our bike infrastructure in BC is even remotely close to the Netherlands'. He's an engineer and sustainable transportation specialist with ISL Engineering and Land Services, and has spent years studying Dutch cycling infrastructure and translating what actually works into BC street design — from major urban corridors to small-town main streets.
