Before Instagram, before Pinterest, before Canva — Polish villagers were creating some of the most intricate visual art in the world. With scissors. 🇵🇱✂️
Wycinanki (pronounced vee-chee-NAHN-kee) is Poland's traditional paper-cutting art, dating back to the 1800s when rural families decorated their homes with hand-cut paper designs. No templates. No machines. Just sheep shears and steady hands.
Two distinct regional styles emerged:
🔴 Kurpie region: bold, symmetrical, single-color roosters and trees
🌈 Łowicz region: multi-layered, rainbow-colored compositions of flowers, birds, and village scenes
The craft was nearly lost during WWII and communism. It survived because grandmothers kept teaching it to their grandchildren in kitchens and village halls.
Today, Wycinanki is recognized by UNESCO as part of Poland's intangible cultural heritage — and a single master-crafted piece can take weeks to complete.
Did you know this art form existed? 🇵🇱
