Citizen of Craft 2023 Awardee Carol E. Mayer has been a supporter and advocate for ceramics for over 35 years, since starting research at the Koerner Gallery of Ceramics. While not a potter herself, she has worked closely with BC potters to understand the technical virtuosity of ceramics, developing a real love and respect for BC ceramics – including their cultural, community and individual value.

With vast experience in ceramics curation, research, as well as ceramics publication, Carol has been a non-stop and much-needed supporter of the craft – and is therefore this year’s Citizen of Craft.

We’re now accepting nominations for the Honorary Citizen of Craft Award

This award recognizes individuals who support, advocate for, and strengthen the craft community without being makers themselves. Help us celebrate those who champion the talent, voices, and diversity of BC’s craftspeople and make a meaningful impact through their dedication and support. This week’s highlight is Aleksandra Kalinic (Aleksandra) 👩‍🎨
Aleksandra Kalinic is a Vancouver-based jewellery artist and painter originally from Belgrade, Serbia. After earning her Master’s degree from Belgrade Art University, she moved to Canada and began creating one-of-a-kind silver jewellery with gold details, blending traditional inspiration with modern design.
Inspired by ancient objects and old buildings, Aleksandra often includes tiny scenes of towns, rooftops, and bridges in her work. She also uses Keum-boo, a Korean technique that adds gold to silver, giving her jewellery a warm and unique look. Her work has been shown in Canada and internationally.

The Earring Show presents Limited Edition Third Place Winner, Nancy Norn-Lennie!

Nancy Norn-Lennie’s Barren Ground Elegance is her most requested earring design. It uses antler in each flower petal and a stitch-by-stitch technique. By attaching beads one at a time, Nancy is able to outline the delicate line of the design, which is the traditional beading technique of the Northern Dene. Applying crystal beads to the edging of the earring adds to the elegance of this unique earring.

Nature has always been a part of Nancy’s creative process. Guided by teachings of the past and using her own artistic creativity, she incorporates natural products such as quills, birch bark, and moose hair tufting into her jewellery.
