We are excited to present a woodcut printing workshop with artist Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo this June! Come and print with us in our sunny studio this summer :)

Woodblock printing focuses on form and texture, utilizing the physical characteristics of wood to create artistic impressions. In this 4-day relief printing course, we will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and carve a woodblock. You will be guided through the technical process of printing using a press as well as hand printing using oil-based ink on Japanese paper. By the end of the workshop, you'll have the confidence and knowledge to continue printing at home.

In this beginner friendly workshop, you will develop a series of reduction-cutting and printing techniques to produce multiple colour combinations. Participants will learn to combine the tone, hue and saturation of multiple colours to achieve an edition of prints.

Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo is a graduate of The Ontario College of Art and Design (2001) and obtained his MFA degree at Concordia University in 2008. He has exhibited extensively across Canada and internationally in venues such as the International Print Centre in New York, The Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas. The Vancouver Art Gallery, MARTE- Museo de Arte Moderno in El Salvador and La Halle Saint Pierre in Paris among others. Originally from El Salvador, his mixed media work on paper addresses issues of historical tramum, collective memory, hybrid identity and ancestry within a diasporic context

Hannah Rickard's exhibition titled "I am the infant and I am the bird" is on view at the Gibson Art Museum until June 14th! Four printed editions are included in this exhibition and were produced through our collaborative residency program in February and March 2026. The mediums used are photo-lithography and screen printing and were created in collaboration with Hannah Rickards, Andreea Mateescu, and Val Loewen.

This exhibition is included in the 2026 capture photography festival.

Learn how to create original one of a kind prints using the immediacy of ink on plexiglass with the addition of collage elements using chine collé. Work with abstract or expressive realism in your image design and enjoy a surprising and vibrant result. We will explore creating collage elements using mulberry paper, rice glue, lift prints, trace monoprints, inked leaves, and other additions before adding coloured ink to the plate and running it through the Glen-Alps press. We will print on damp Rives BFK or other suitable rag paper and dry prints flat between boards. You can expect to complete 4-6 8x10 prints during the workshop.

Participants have the opportunity to continue practicing what they've learned in our community darkroom for a sliding scale access fee of $50 - $150 per month.

In this course, participants will learn the process of developing black and white film and printing traditional silver gelatin prints in the darkroom. This is an introduction that covers the basics - including darkroom safety and procedures, developing film, looking at and assessing negatives, making a good print and understanding contrast control. It will give students skills to print in the darkroom on their own and understand what the next steps are in their exploration of traditional black and white printing.

What is intaglio?

Join Maya Schueller-Elmes in the pursuit of the harmonious relationship between copper, acid, and pressure! This workshop provides an introduction to copper intaglio, from drypoint to etching.

Intaglio is a family of printmaking techniques in which an image is incised into a plate, the incised areas of the plate holds ink during the printing process. A traditional etching press is used to apply enough pressure onto the plate to transfer the ink onto cotton rag paper.

Using sheet copper, participants will explore two techniques for image making, drypoint and line etching. Line etching is done with the use of an etching mordant, while drypoint is an acid-free process. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the use of other intaglio tools during this process, including burnishers, roulettes, and scribes. Participants can expect to finish this workshop with at least two images incised into a copper plate and at least three prints of each image on cotton rag paper.

The basics of using the tools, facilities, and equipment needed for intaglio printing will be covered in this workshop. This includes operating a press, using an etching bath, and preparing copper for printing and etching. All workshop participants have the opportunity to continue working independently in the studio following the workshop if they choose to. For more information please contact us!

In this workshop, participants will learn saddle stitch, pamphlet stitch, and Japanese stab binding; the three fundamental techniques in bookbinding. We will learn about bookbinding terms and tools, paper stocks, and ways to cut, fold, and punch holes on paper. Each participant would be able to take home the samples they make. Learn to tone your cyanotypes with plant based materials!

Date: Friday February 6th 2026 from 6PM-9PM

Cyanotypes are a beautiful blue colour, but blue isn’t the only colour you can get from them. In this workshop you will learn about toning cyanotypes to get other tones like brown and turquoise. Using various plant materials, we will tone cyanotypes and talk about the many ways we can experiment with the process and affect the final colours. This is a sustainable process that doesn’t use any harsh chemicals, just plant material you might find around your home. It is a good option for creating prints that have a historic process look without using silver nitrate or other chemicals that can be hard to find or need more caution when handling. The workshop will cover the process of toning with plants, how to get different colours in the images, which prints and papers work best for toning, and what steps are next in the toning adventure. You will need to bring 4 – 5 of your cyanotype prints that you are willing to experiment with. Up to 8×10 only please! Slightly overexposed prints tend to work best.

This is a one-night introductory class on the basics of lino block printing using one colour. Lino printing is an easy and fun way to make bold prints of your art that have that hand made feel!
Throughout the evening we will go over the basic fundamentals of lino carving, from initial sketch, to carving your design, setting up the press, and making final prints that you will be able to take home at the end of our 3 hour session. We will be using 4x6 lino printing on 5x7 paper, and we will only be printing using black ink during this class - but coloured paper will be available to experiment with!
This class is great for both beginners and seasoned artists who want to get into the fun world of printmaking!

Join Maya Schueller-Elmes in pursuit of the harmonious relationship between squeegee, ink, and screen. This workshop covers the basics of stencil screen printing, from producing film to pulling a print.

Participants will have the opportunity to work with hand drawn film or digital film created in photoshop. Various methods of image production will be covered, including basic photoshop techniques. Prior experience with photoshop is not mandatory, however it is encouraged for those who wish to work exclusively with digital film.

Participants can expect to finish this workshop with a two or three colour printed edition of their own design and the knowledge needed to continue screen printing independently.
