“A sincere thank you for your kindness, understanding, and financial assistance to help me keep my house that I have worked so hard to attain.”

Dear Adam,

The quote above says it all. It has been a difficult few years for the arts and entertainment community, to say the least. For many entertainment industry workers, the recovery from COVID was halted by the impact of two labour disputes in the U.S. Thankfully, as a community we have each other’s backs, and now that the strikes are over, things are looking up.

We are so proud that we have been able to help during this difficult time. The need has been staggering – we have delivered over $2.9 million in emergency financial assistance and have received 1,500 applications – almost triple what we would expect in a normal year.

While the strikes are over, it will be some time before people return to work. Many projects are aiming to resume in February. While we are only weeks away from returning to “normality,” that time will be brutal for many who can’t make rent or pay for groceries. The hard times aren’t over and given the time of year, we know things will seem even more difficult for many.

One of our donors who understands this is Paul Bronfman. He is a great Canadian and a legend in our industry. In an extraordinary gesture, Paul has offered to match gifts up to $50,000 for donations received from now until the end of December.

DONATE TODAY
Will you please help us reach our goal of raising an additional $50,000 by December 31? Whatever you can give will be doubled! Your generosity is the fuel to our vital work of helping others who need it most.

$100,000 is an extraordinary amount of money. It enables us to help keep people in their homes, buy necessities, and find work. It helps us run mental health workshops and provide financial wellness training. Most of all, your donation is a gift of grace and dignity for our cultural workers. Please donate to double your gift and double your impact!

Sincerely,

David Hope

P.S. Please donate by December 31. Follow Paul Bronfman’s example and double the impact of your donation.

Recieved this email from our friends at the AFC today -

Dear Colleague,

I’m happy to inform you that, effective immediately and for a very limited time, The AFC will be accepting Emergency Financial Aid applications from entertainment industry members who are currently facing eviction, foreclosure, or utility disconnection. We will be accepting these applications until December 15, 2023, at 5:30pm ET.

We are preparing to fully resume accepting all new applications on January 8, 2024. In the meantime, we currently have capacity to process a limited number of applications to assist the members of our community whose needs are most urgent.

Capacity is limited. As such, we cannot guarantee that all applications will be seen before our scheduled end-of-year closure (December 23 to January 7). Any applications that cannot be seen in December will be seen in priority sequence when the office reopens on January 8, 2024.

Go to our website at https://afchelps.ca/emergency-aid-december-2023/ to learn more about:

December 2023 eligibility for those facing eviction, foreclosure, or disconnection;

how to apply, including essential support documents;

where to send inquiries and applications.

Please note that anyone who applies after December 15th will be asked to re-send their application after January 8, 2024, along with new, up-to-date information.

Additional information about the Emergency Financial Aid Program, including frequently asked questions, can be found at https://afchelps.ca/emergency-aid/. If you have any further questions, please email [email protected] to reach the first available program staff member.

A reminder that The AFC's emergency financial aid is not a replacement for lost income. It is also not a loan, so it does not need to be repaid.

The AFC is a charity that is wholly supported by the community we serve. We thank you again for your patience and support.

Sincerely,

The AFC Team

Hanukkah begins!

In 2023, Hanukkah begins the evening of December 7 through the evening of December 15.

Hanukkah recalls the triumph of the Maccabees over the Assyrian Greeks against assimilation, and the miracle of a small jug of oil that lasted eight nights to light the menorah in the ancient Temple in Jerusalem.
Hanukkah happens each year on 25 Kislev; because the Hebrew calendar is lunar, it may be celebrated anywhere from late November to late December, depending on the year, and does not always overlap with Christmas.
On the first night of Hanukkah, there are often community menorah lighting events to light the first candle on an oversized menorah. Hanukkah does not have the work restrictions for observant Jews characteristic of holidays such as Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Some Jews may still shift their workday and leave before sundown to light Hanukkah candles with family and friends.
Hanukkah often includes festive meals, songs and gift giving. Potato pancakes called latkes, jelly-filled doughnuts (sufganiyot in Hebrew), and other treats fried in oil, which recall the miracle of the oil, are popular. Hanukkah gelt is shared in the form of chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Children and adults alike play a game with a four-sided top called a dreidel (sevivon in Hebrew).
Starting on Thursday, feel free to wish your Jewish colleagues Happy Hanukkah or Chag Sameach (“good holiday,” pronounced “HOG sum-AY-ach”) on any or all of the eight days of celebration!

Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11

On November 11, a Remembrance Day commemoration will take place to honour Canada’s Veterans, and remember all those who gave their lives for our country and freedoms.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 11, at Victory Square. It will be followed by a parade.

While people are welcome to observe the ceremony in person, a livestream will be available to watch on the City’s YouTube page.

Happy Diwali to those who will be celebrating on November 12. We wish you joy throughout this period commemorated by the triumph of light over darkness.

Known as the festival of light, Diwali signifies the spiritual victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. It is a unifying time observed by people across different faiths including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists and Muslims here in Vancouver and around the world. Celebrations often involve illuminating homes, lighting diyas (oil lamps), fireworks displays, sharing gifts, sweets and spending time with cherished friends, relatives and community members.

In recognition of Diwali, City Hall and Burrard Bridge will be illuminated in yellow. Metro Vancouver is home to the second-largest South Asian community in Canada.

Living a Life of Balance with Rebecca Hass

October 25, 2023, 1-3pm ET on Zoom

Certified life coach Rebecca Hass has been helping creatives for over 20 years, working with them to figure out what a well-lived life looks like for them in their chosen industries.

In this Mental Wellness Workshop, Rebecca will address the misconception that a good life is "having it all" in one's personal life and career. This is often marketed as balance, but Rebecca teaches that a balanced life is much simpler and easier to attain.

Rebecca will share tools to assist you in discovering:
· what really matters to you;
· your personal definition of balance;
· how to get more of what you actually want;
· how to get less of what you don't want;
· what is getting in the way.

Rebecca will guide you in creating the template for real, sustainable change and envisioning a plan so that you can live your definition of balance, starting right now.

Accessibility: closed captions and ASL interpretation provided. If you require additional accommodations to make this event accessible for you, please get in touch, and we will do our best to meet your needs.
