Vancouver is honoured to participate in the Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) Project at Burning Man 2011. The Burning Man Vancouver (BMV) Planning Group agreed to go ahead with the project, but everyone needs to be involved to make this happen! We are in charge of all phases of our effigy's lifespan from grant writing, to fundraising, to design, to construction, to guardianship, to fire safety t
eam, to Leave No Trace (LNT). We have already assembled a team of people to lead various aspects of the project. There have benn three project planning meetings. At the first meeting a good number of enthusiastic Burners showed up to participate in the formation of Vancouver’s vision. At the second meeting six designs were presented and after much deliberation, we chose the submission by Robert, which has since been named “Playa Time”. A third meeting set in motion activation of build and project timelines, fundraising investigations, as well as providing an online presence.
:::::THE DESIGN IDEA:::::
“Time is the school in which we learn,
Time is the fire in which we burn.”
Calmly We Walk Through This April's Day
by Delmore Schwartz
‘Playa Time’ is designed as an interactive experience within time. As participants make the clock work, in essence making time shift, they are invited to reflect upon on the experience of being in the Now. As the clock goes up in flames on it’s final night, the only thing left will be the present. A 20' tall grandfather clock with a large drum in the base, big enough for a Burner to run in as if in a giant hamster wheel. As you run in the wheel, your efforts will cause the minute hand of the clock to move. Every time the minute hand passes 12 o'clock, a cuckoo clock feature will appear to do something special. The hour hand will be in sync with the actual time of day so you will be able to tell approximate time by the clock, within an hour or so. This effigy is designed to be interactive throughout the week, and it is also designed to present viewers with a very impressive BURN!
::::FUNDRAISING:::::
Brainstorm meeting: all are invited to attend! A fundraising meeting has been planned for February 24th at 7 pm. We are looking for people to help brainstorm on various ways to raise funds for this project to happen. "Playa Time 1"
In observance of Burnal Equinox, marking the midpoint between burns, we are having a fundraiser for the CORE project on March 19th. Get your costumes ready and look for details to be announced soon.

:::::WHAT IS THE CORE PROJECT:::::
The Circle of Regional Effigies will be a ring of effigies that will surround the Burning Man in Black Rock City 2011, each created by a local community from within the Burning Man Regional Network. Most will be representations of the effigies burned at Regional network burn events, but others will be new creations. The sculptures' placement in a ring around the Man suggests the progress of the Burning Man culture radiating outward from the main fire at our center, out into the larger world. The projects will culminate in a coordinated burn effort, either burning multiple pieces over the course of the week or burning every piece in the Circle in a single culminating event. The theme for Burning Man 2011 is Rites of Passage. Thirteen years ago, the Burning Man Regional Network was born. In 2011, the Regional Network 'comes of age' and regions around the world are invited to build, transport, set up, and BURN our own regional effigies! The Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE) is a one-time collaborative art project composed of up to 28 effigies or sculptures, each produced by a different regional community. These effigies will be approximately 20’ tall and up to 20' wide. They will be placed in a garden just outside of the blinking ring surrounding the Man.
::::HOW BURNING MAN WILL HELP:::::
This is the biggest collaborative project by the BM regional network ever undertaken for on playa art, and BMHQ is looking at supplying each region with a small honourarium and other on-playa support. The majority of funding for this project will need to be raised by Vancouver region.

::::HOW YOU CAN HELP:::::
We CANNOT make this happen without participation from just about everyone in the community. Even if you are not going to the desert this year, there are many opportunities for you to participate and be a part of our community presence on playa. We will need a large team of volunteers who can help build the effigy here in Vancouver, assist with events and other fundraising efforts between now and August, and help on-playa at Burning Man: as Effigy Guardians throughout the event, Fire Safety Team, and Leave No Trace crew to clean up and dispose of all of the remains, etc. Vancouver Burners: this is your time to shine!
