Proudly operating out of Vancouver, BC, since 2010, the Kalama Collective facilitates, creates, and supports the hosting of local art, culture and educational events city-wide! As an organization, Kalama's initiatives are fueled by Vancouver's need for more progressive, respectful, and open space where local artists, teachers, creators, hackers, and activists can exchange their projects with the s
urrounding community. Kalama seeks a subversion of the conventional options for the creation, display, and absorption of the city's creative arts, political actions, and daily social interaction. There is little doubt that Vancouver's increasingly gentrified art and culture scene is having a numbing effect on the city's creative and cultural consciousness, particularly among youth and younger adults. In an effort to warm the numbing, Kalama has initiated a variety of intangible "micro-movements" that have been manifesting into some downright inspiring events. We believe hosting these exchanges will inspire others to join the creative and informative process by tapping into their contributory potential and chasing their wildest dreams! In facilitating this process, the Kalama Collective encourages individuals and groups to tangibly drive the global changes they desire in their immediate community. The results of such tangible acts - positive community health, self-empowerment, professional skill development, feelings of accomplishment, tackling personal and societal challenges, trust in ourselves and others - are intangible and definitely worth the investment for our future. While striving to empower its members, contributors, and event guests, the Kalama Collective seeks to spark similar initiatives elsewhere through word-of-mouth, social media, press, and/or carrier pigeons. Our vision and those envisioning it are in constant flux, as are our projects, but in spite of that fluidity, Kalama is firm in its mission to support community empowerment through hard-work, love, and respect (oh, and of course lots of dancing)!
