Significant barriers remain for women and gender diverse people considering running for office. Our new report and toolkit with The Feminist Campaign School builds on the 2022 Barriers Report, examining the experiences of women and gender diverse people in local government.

Along with the report, we are launching the first of five toolkits, Strengthening Democracy through Diversity, a guide for strengthening civic participation, public decision-making, and democratic practice for local elected officials.

Our new report finds the majority of racialized local elected officials in B.C. face systemic racism, harassment, and abuse on the job.

The INSPIRE pilot project, a collaborative initiative between Centre for Civic Governance and Foundation for a Path Forward , aims to identify ways to better support racialized local elected officials in rural communities across the province.
We are excited to launch this report, with a supporting online harms toolkit and mental health and legal resources document for those experiencing racism and harassment, as part of our iterate three-year INSPIRE project, funded by the Law Foundation of British Columbia. Link in bio

Our latest research reveals an untapped job creation opportunity: cleaning up Western Canada’s approximately 381,000 unplugged oil and gas wells could generate around 11,000 full-time jobs over 25 years.

Oil and gas companies committed to this cleanup when they drilled their wells, yet most of that work remains incomplete. Without regulatory action, taxpayers will be left to foot the bill while communities, farmland, and drinking water remain at risk.

JUST IN! Our new report, Jobs in Oil and Gas Well Cleanup in Alberta, B.C and Saskatchewan, is the first ground-up assessment of job creation potential in the well-cleanup sector in Western Canada.

Based on interviews with workers and contractors from active cleanup firms, the report outlines Canada’s untapped opportunity in the restoration economy.

Community safety and street disorder are quickly becoming the key issues of the 2026 local government election. With the rise of populism, fear and quick fixes are dominating the public dialogue. In this webinar, Community Action Initiative will host a panel of local elected officials who will share how they talk about community safety to concerned constituents and business owners. This session will provide real instances of community leadership as well as a primer on key messages related to community safety, mental health, and substance use.
