Rainbow Refugee is observing September 30 as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We acknowledge that one day of reflection and action is not enough. We commit to continue our ongoing learning about the stories and history of indigenous communities and their experiences of the land and of the settler colonial project.

We commit to unlearning decolonizing practices within our organization and our sector and implementing new ways of being in relationship to land that are respectful of ancient knowledge and wisdom.

It is important that meaningful reconciliation is accompanied by educating ourselves and developing lasting and transformative relationships with indigenous communities from the lands we live in.

As we continue to learn the truth about the horrors of residential schools and the centuries of abuse endured by indigenous peoples across Turtle Island, we are also paying attention and making efforts to implement the calls to action.

WE stand in solidarity with indigenous communities and are grateful for their generosity and teachings.

Truth and reconciliation is the work of every single day!

We stand in solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ community in TÜRKIYE!

Rainbow Refugee is closely monitoring the recent arrests, raids and restrictions targeting LGBTQIA+ individuals, organizations and spaces across Türkiye.

We urgently call on UNHCR and the Government of Canada to closely assess the deteriorating circumstances facing LGBTQIA+ refugees on the ground, and to expedite pending resettlement cases, interviews and departures, particularly for individuals who have already endured prolonged waits.

Staff field trip and learning day✨

Earlier this summer, we had the opportunity to go on a staff field trip in our Neighbourhood, and spend the day learning together on how we can better to our work and support our members.

We are still a very small team of dedicated staff, making sure we are doing our best to do the work and create safer spaces for q***r refugees in our city!

Pride without Borders: Situating Vancouver in the Movement for Global 2SLGBTQIA+ Rights✨

Rainbow Refugee Society, in collaboration with Dignity Network Canada // Le Réseau Dignité Canada, hosted a private reception welcoming Zhanar Sekerbayeva to Vancouver for the Pride season.

Zhanar is a human rights activist, poet, and journalist in Kazakhstan. As a feminist le***an, her activism is intersectional, demanding rights and livelihood for LGBTQI, for s*x workers, and for women with disabilities. She co-led national women’s marches, despite arrest and forceful opposition by political leaders. She is an effective, vocal advocate at UN bodies, European Union, and International LGBTQI convenings.

The evening was a great opportunity to connect with Zhanar along with local 2SLGBTQIA+ civil society leaders and advocates.

Together we will reflect on Vancouver and Canadian civil society’s role in advancing global 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.
We are grateful for dentonscanada for hosting us and for everyone who showed up.
