Dear members,

We are informed that there may be political demonstrations on campus today.

While the organizers of this demonstration event are using the words “strike” and “picket line”, we want to be clear that this protest is NOT a legal strike as is defined in the BC Labour Code or in our contracts. That means that Article 17.01 that protects members who choose not to cross a picket line does not apply.

It is important to note that this is a demonstration, not a strike, and staff are expected to report to work as usual. If you encounter any challenges accessing your workplace, avoid engaging and contact your manager or direct supervisor for assistance. If you are concerned about safety, please also contact Campus Security.

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide clarity, as we are concerned that the demonstration’s use of terms like “strike” or “picket lines” may lead to confusion among our members.

UBC Clerical and Library Workers Lead the Way for Maternity Benefits

In 1974, years before other Canadian unions won maternity leave benefits in collective agreements, the Association of University & College Employees (AUCE) Local 1 at the University of BC (UBC) made history. In its first collective agreement, UBC clerical and library workers achieved contract language that provided fully funded maternity leave for its members. It was a breakthrough not just for workers at UBC, but for families across the country.
