Georgia Strait Alliance

Georgia Strait Alliance Grounded in environmental justice, we mobilize and support collective action to protect the Salish Sea In the coming three years, our priorities will be:

1.

We acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples. Commitment: We are committed to a future for our region that includes clean water and air, healthy wild salmon runs, rich marine life and natural areas, and sustainable communities achieved by using the best available science, precautionary principle, experience, traditional

ecological knowledge, and in consideration of community values. Goals - Georgia Strait Alliance works to:
Protect biodiversity and wildlife habitat;
Restore the region’s water and air quality;
Promote the social, cultural, economic and environmental sustainability of the region’s communities;
Foster understanding and stewardship of the marine environment;
Raise awareness of the links between the health of ecosystems and human communities;
Recognize the rights and title of First Nations, and where appropriate, to work in partnership with them in achieving the above goals. There are over 125 marine species at risk in and around Georgia Strait, a number that has nearly doubled in the last three years. Their protection and the protection of their habitat are what drive all our work, as is the sustainability of the communities of the Strait. Oil and fossil fuel spill prevention
2. Gaining accountability from the big oil companies for the local impacts of climate change
3. Protecting at risk species such as the southern resident orca and wild salmon
4. Increasing public understanding of and engagement of local ocean issues
5. Decreasing the impacts of recreational boating on our local waters

These goals and priorities will be achieved through the following programs:
Energy
Climate Accountability
Clean Marine BC
Biodiversity
Public Engagement

Final day on the Hill, and what a great way to wrap up the week.

We had the pleasure of reconnecting with Wade Grant, who stopped by to say hello, and meeting Shelly Kemp from the QENTOL, YEN / W̱SÁNEĆ Marine Guardians and Andrew Sheriff Malahat Nation.

Thank you for taking the time to connect during a busy week on the Hill!

And nice to have Raincoast Conservation Fdn as a great allies with us!

🌊 We’re thrilled to welcome three Canada Summer Jobs hires to GSA for our summer outreach! These incredible additions to the team ensure GSA can be present in more communities to listen, learn, and amplify the concerns and solutions that emerge from within the diverse communities connected to the Salish Sea.

Hazel and Elizabeth, our Clean Marine BC assistants, will be out in the community this summer visiting boating facilities and attending local events, connecting with boaters, and sharing resources that support green boating practices, while also helping people learn more about GSA and our work. You’ll see them throughout Victoria, Saanich, and the Gulf Islands at events and on the docks.

Jade will be working with our Campaigns Manager and program staff to develop new engagement materials that reflect our evolving campaigns and strategic priorities, while also supporting key initiatives across the organization and supporting outreach events in Vancouver!

We’re so excited to have them on board as part of our summer team!

Day 2: Another inspiring day at Whales in Our Nature! 🫍🫍🫍

Highlight of the day? Seeing whale-safe gear in action. The innovation and technology being developed are truly impressive, demonstrating that we can protect endangered species while supporting a strong economy for Canada.

Today’s conversations brought together voices from across the seafood supply chain—from wharf to table—to explore both the challenges and opportunities of expanding whale-safe fishing gear and strengthening markets for whale-safe seafood.

The discussions focused on the partnerships, policies, and collaborations needed to successfully implement Canada’s Whale-Safe Fishing Gear Strategy and support the coexistence of thriving fisheries and healthy whale populations.

Happy World Oceans Day! 🌊

Last year we shared this artwork with a sense of hope & a commitment to continue to work for cleaner, quieter and thriving waters of the Salish Sea. J-63, who was born in spring 2025, is here to witness another spring, and we hope calves like her grow up to experience a lifetime in the waters they call home.

The recent proposal by the Federal Government to fast-track major projects put species at-risk like Southern Resident orcas into further danger, by completely deprioritizing environmental guardrails and championing solely for economic benefits. The stakes could not be higher for the SRKWs.

The good news is that the deadline for feedback has been extended to July 22 from June 7. This means our advocacy and pushback is working!

This Oceans Day, let’s build on the momentum and continue to show up for the Southern Residents and the Salish Sea. Thank you for taking action and please spread the word! 🩵

Attention supporters!
As you may know, the Federal Government has proposed to fast-track major projects. The shortening of approval timelines to under one year is a critical concern amplified by weakening safeguards to protect the environment, endangered species, and democratic accountability. Industrial mega-projects that will shape the future of the Salish Sea for decades to come will be approved at the expense of protections afforded under the Species at Risk Act (SARA).

We have until June 7 2026 to tell the Federal Government that the Salish Sea and the SRKWs deserve better. The proposal to fast-track major projects and the conditions listed within the proposal, will push the Southern Residents closer to extinction. No pipeline or major project should push Southern Resident killer whales closer to extinction.

Use our call tool to contact our decision makers and demand stronger environmental protections in the wake of rapid industrialization. It’s time for them to hear what we have to say.

PS. We have provided talking points for your call.

On this International Day for Biodiversity, leaders from Wuikinuxv, Nuxalk, Kitasoo Xai’xais, Heiltsuk, Gitxaała, and Gitga’at Nations, Canada, and British Columbia have signed a historic agreement to establish a National Marine Conservation Area Reserve on the Central Coast of BC, as well as an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area, that will protect up to 6,700 square kilometres of coastal waters.

This agreement goes by the name of Mia-yaltwa Ha’lidzogm hoon, a hybrid name composed from the Indigenous languages of the partner Nations, meaning "Realm of the Salmon, Home of the Salmon", and signifies an important step in the generations of work that these Nations have been doing to steward the marine ecosystem since time immemorial.

‼️ACTION ALERT‼️
The last couple of weeks have been a roller coaster. The Federal Government continues to give us mixed signals on its commitment towards biodiversity protection.

We are now being presented with a proposal to fast-track major projects, with environmental assessment approvals and permitting decisions to occur in under one year. Buried within the proposal are terrifying conditions that completely undermine the urgency to protect the SRKWs.

The establishment of Federal Economic Zones, and exemption of projects from SARA’s jeopardy test, will further endanger the survival of the SRKWs and impact the long-term health of the Salish Sea. It’s now or never. We must not normalise extinction, and we must ask how far are we willing to go for short-term economic progress & development.

Take action https://georgiastrait.org/work/species-at-risk/orca-protection/protect-southern-residents/, and spread the word as much as possible. We haven’t signed up for this future, have you?

The SRKWs and the Salish Sea deserve much better.
