It’s been 54 years since martial law was declared in the Philippines on September 21, 1972. We recognize martial law as a time with some of the most human rights violations in the Philippines, with upwards of 70,000 of political prisoners, 35,000+ torture cases, and 3000+ extrajudicial killings.

Today, Marcos Sr’s son remains president. Despite the grave crimes against humanity committed by his father, he still remains in power, even recovering his family’s wealth that was stolen from the people.

Today, land defenders in the countryside continue to face conditions that are the same as martial law - massacres by the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), illegal arrests, detentions, harassment, and more.

Just a few weeks ago 11 were arrested while peacefully barricading a mining company in Nueva Vizcaya.

Last week, the United States, Japan, and the Philippines hosted the first Luzon Economic Corridor Investment Forum, with the aim of increasing both government and private investments into the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC). The LEC is an American-led initiative that connects major trading ports across the Luzon province, and is part of the overall US Indo-Pacific Strategy to further bring key resources and manufacturing from the region into the control of the United States and its allies.

In May, Canada officially committed to the Luzon Economic Corridor project, and thus is a participant in the theft of land, livelihoods, and natural resources of the Philippines for capitalist profit.

The LEC and other endeavours such as Pax Silica (both of which were protested at the Investment Forum last week), bring destruction to the lives of the Indigenous people of the Philippines, devastate the environment, and subject activists and land defenders to increased state violence.

Right here in downtown Vancouver, there is a mining company that is actively destroying lands and displacing peasant and indigenous communities in the Philippines.

OceanaGold operates the Didipio mine in Nueva Vizcaya. Communities in the area have been protesting the mine for decades due to the intense environmental devastation and destruction of people’s livelihood.

The Carney government also recently announced plans for a new West Coast pipeline, which, under the new Bill C5, will steamroll consultation with First Nations as well as environmental risk assessments.

Join us for an afternoon of solidarity as we launch our Planet for the People campaign!

Highlighting the importance of land defense, human rights and environmental protection, we will be discussing the situation in the Philippines as well as here in so-called Canada, highlight the connections and talk about the complicity of the Carney government.

The Canadian state, arm in arm with corporations, continues to sponsor land grabbing and the destruction of livelihoods, both domestically and abroad.

Today, August 30, is International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

CPSHR stands in solidarity with all those who have gone missing in the Philippines, as well as around the world. We also stand in solidarity with the communities and families of those disappeared, who continue their search and who deserve answers.

We strongly condemn Marcos Jr.’s continued use of enforced disappearances as a way to suppress activists and defenders, as well as the Carney government’s complicity.

On April 28, 2023, organizers Dexter Capuyan and Gene Roz Jamil “Bazoo” de Jesus were taken by armed men who identified themselves as members of the PNP. To this day, their families have no answers as to what happened to them. CPSHR calls for the resurfacing of, and accountability for, victims of enforced disappearances in the Philippines!

Last night, members of CPSHR and allied organizations gathered for an Art Build as a part of our Planet for the People campaign.

We discussed the shameful actions happening right now in Nueva Vizcaya at Didipio Mine. We also discussed our demands for action to stop Canadian mining in the Philippines, and the subsequent destruction and land and livelihood caused by mining corporations.
