BIOGRAPHY
Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey (born Evangelos) was born in Rhodes to Ioannis and Stergia Koufalakis. He completed his general education at the Patmias Ecclesiastical School. In 1993, he was tonsured a monk at the Holy Monastery of Panagia Paramythia in Rhodes, receiving the name Apostolos. In the same year, he was ordained Deacon by the late Metropolitan Apostolos of Rhodes and, in 1996, Priest by the same Hierarch.
He studied theology at the School of Theology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from which he graduated in 2000. The following year, with the permission and blessing of his spiritual father, he traveled to the United States of America for further theological studies, while simultaneously serving communities of the Holy Metropolis of Boston.
In 2004, he received the degree of Master of Sacred Theology from the School of Theology of Boston University and was appointed by the then Archbishop of America, Archbishop Demetrios, as Priest-in-Charge of the historic Community of the Holy Cathedral of Saint Demetrios and Saint Catherine in Astoria, where he served with dedication and carried out a rich spiritual ministry.
In 2009, he assumed the directorship of the Cultural Center of the Holy Archdiocese in Astoria. In 2011, he was appointed Protosyncellus of the Metropolitan of San Francisco, Metropolitan Gerasimos.
In 2014, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate unanimously elected him Bishop of Medeia, as Auxiliary Bishop to the then Archbishop of America, Archbishop Demetrios, who ordained him to the episcopacy on December 20 of the same year.
In 2018, he was appointed Chief Secretary of the Eparchial Synod of the Holy Archdiocese of America. In 2021, he was appointed by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America as Patriarchal Commissioner of the then-vacant Holy Metropolis of New Jersey, with responsibility for its liturgical and pastoral needs.
Following the favorable recommendation of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, he was unanimously elected by the Holy and Sacred Synod as Metropolitan of New Jersey on July 24, 2023.

Greece Makes History, Wins First-Ever Men’s Water Polo World Cup
Greece captured the first major global title in the history of its men’s national water polo team on Sunday, defeating Hungary 15-14 in a thrilling World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup final in Sydney, Australia. The victory ended years of near misses and established Greece among the sport’s elite after five previous defeats in major international finals.
Captain Stelios Argyropoulos scored the decisive goal with just twelve seconds remaining, capping a dramatic contest that saw Greece surrender a three-goal advantage before delivering one final, championship-winning attack.
Defender Dimitris Skoumpakis produced the performance of his international career, scoring five goals and making the crucial defensive block on Hungary’s final possession to secure the historic victory.

Greece finally breaks through in Water Polo World Cup championship
The triumph represents a landmark moment for Greek water polo, which has consistently done well in international tournaments but had never before lifted a senior men’s world title.
Head coach Thodoris Vlachos guided his side through a tense final against one of the sport’s traditional powerhouses. Greece led 5-2 early in the opening quarter and later appeared to be in control again after building a 14-11 advantage midway through the fourth period. Hungary, however, refused to surrender.
Led by Krisztián Zalánki, who scored four goals, the Hungarians erased the deficit and equalized at 14-14 with only 45 seconds left, setting up a dramatic finish.
Argyropoulos delivers the championship
Following a timeout, Greece patiently worked the ball with a numerical advantage after Kostas Kakaris earned an exclusion. The attack found Argyropoulos, who fired home the winning goal with twelve seconds remaining, sending the Greek bench into celebration.
Hungary had one final opportunity, but Skoumpakis blocked the last shot, preserving Greece’s one-goal lead and sealing an unforgettable victory. Besides his decisive goal in the final, Argyropoulos was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Skoumpakis leads Greece’s offensive effort in Water Polo World Cup championship
Skoumpakis finished with five goals, while Giannis Gkiouvetsis added two. Argyropoulos, Konstantinos Papanastasiou and Konstantinos Pouros each scored twice, with Kakaris and Gardikas also finding the net.
Goalkeeper Panagiotis Tzortzatos made several crucial saves, particularly during Hungary’s late comeback attempt. The final quarter scores reflected the balance of an intense championship match:
First quarter: Greece 5-3
Halftime: Greece 7-6
Third quarter: Greece 11-10
Final: Greece 15-14
Historic milestone for Greek sports and the Greek National Water Polo Team
The World Cup title crowns years of steady progress for the Greek men’s national team, which has become one of the world’s most consistent water polo nations through Olympic, World Championship, and European competitions.
For a generation of players that repeatedly came within reach of international gold, Sunday’s victory in Sydney finally delivered the trophy that had long eluded Greek water polo.
The victory also reinforces Greece’s status as one of the leading powers in international water polo ahead of future World Aquatics competitions.

Men’s Water Polo World Cup: Greece claim gold after 15-14 victory over Hungary
Greece’s men’s national water polo team reached the top by winning the World Cup trophy, defeating Hungary 15-14 in a thrilling final in Sydney.
Theodoros Vlachos’ “Ghostbusters” secured the victory in a dramatic encounter, with Dimitris Skoumpakis scoring five goals and Stelios Argyropoulos sealing the triumph with the winning goal just 12 seconds before the final whistle.
“The national water polo team has given us many great distinctions and medals, establishing our country among the world’s elite in the sport. Today, it wrote a new golden page in its history by winning the gold medal at the World Cup for the first time,” President of the Hellenic Republic Constantine Tassoulas said in a statement. “Warm congratulations to the international players, the coach and everyone who contributed to this great achievement. You have made us all proud,” he added.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also posted a message congratulating the men’s national water polo team on its World Cup victory.
“The men’s national water polo team has made golden history in Australia, winning its first World Cup in a sport that has always given us strong emotions and international distinctions. Theodoros Vlachos and his players showed what passion, perseverance and a winning mentality mean. Many congratulations! You are always worthy!” he said.

13 AUGUST, 1937 – 20 JULY, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Caliopi “Popi” Quilici. She passed away at the age of 88, surrounded by her daughters and close family friend Octavia, at Richmond Hospital on July 20th, 2026.

Caliopi was born in Samos, Greece, on August 13th, 1937, to Aristidis and Evangelia Ioannou. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Domenico (Nick), and her sisters, Sofia, Angeliki, and Sotiria. Caliopi is survived by her children: Lola (Ken), Angie (Paul), and Anna (Dino).

Cherished grandchildren: Greg (Nadi), Kaliopi (J***y), Domenic, Nicholas, Brandon (Minjee), Eleni (David), Dante (Andrea), and great-grandmother of David “Junior” and another great-grandson on the way.

She is also survived by her sister, Matina, as well as many nephews, nieces, family members, and friends across Greece, Italy, and Canada.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, in her memory would be greatly appreciated.

Our Mother will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. ❤️

Caliopi Quilici passed away on July 20, 2026, at the age of 88. Caliopi was a resident of Richmond, British Columbia.
