BC votes twice this month: municipal elections on October 17, and the provincial election on October 24. We know there is massive support across BC for walkable neighbourhoods where people can access their daily needs within a short walk, and feel safe and protected from car traffic.

To every candidate on the ballot: this is your playbook for more walkable communities!

In celebration of our 35th anniversary, and ahead of the BC elections, we are sharing 35 ideas that municipalities can implement to support walking and rolling (including the use of wheelchairs and mobility devices) in their communities.

The ideas are grouped into themes: making walking safe, fun, accessible, convenient, and visible, measurable and funded. They range from 30 km/h streets and raised crosswalks to car-free Halloween block parties, more places to sit, and complete communities where daily needs are a short walk from home.

Most British Columbians want to walk more. These ideas show how local and provincial leaders can make that possible.

If you're running for office, we'd love to hear which ideas you'll take forward. If you're voting, please share this with the people asking for you vote.

Well, that was a celebration for the books! 🎉

Thank you to all our incredible speakers for such heartfelt stories. What diverse perspectives and insights on creating a city for all ages! Great conversations were had, and you could really feel the sense of community and connection in the room.

There were so many memorable moments from our 35th Anniversary celebration, but a standout one was recognizing BEST’s Seniors Transportation Advocacy Committee. These are volunteers who show up to meetings, workshops, and consultations, share their own stories of getting around the city, and who help push decision makers to see our streets through the eyes of older adults. Getting to thank them on National Seniors Day was extra special.

A huge thank you to Sabrina Lau Texier for setting such a warm and welcoming feel as our MC, you tied the whole evening together beautifully.

And big thanks to Gene from Satya Photo for the amazing photos.

There’s more to share soon, but for now thank you to everyone who came, and to all who’ve been part of BEST’s story over the past 35 years!

It was an exciting start to Day 2 at . BEST’s Executive Director, Laura Jane, joined active transportation and mobility champions from across the region, including and , to speak with media about why investing in active transportation matters.

Representing BEST and our partners in the active transportation community at UBCM is an important part of making sure investing in walking, cycling, and other sustainable ways of getting around are part of the conversation about BC’s transportation future.

British Columbians need safe, convenient, and affordable ways to get where they need to go. At a time when many households are feeling the pressure of rising costs, transportation choices can be an important affordability tool, helping people spend less on getting around while keeping more of that money in local communities.

That’s why our campaign is calling on the Province to restore the BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program. Provincial investment helps communities build safer streets, improve affordability, and supports healthier, more connected communities.

At UBCM, BEST is encouraging mayors and councillors to support resolutions related to road safety and active transportation, including EB28, which calls for restoring the provincial cost-share program.

When people have more transportation options, our communities become happier, healthier, and more resilient.

Across BC, people are asking for safer streets, better sidewalks, protected bike routes, accessible crossings, and stronger connections between the places they live, work, and visit.

For more than 30 years, provincial active transportation grant programs have helped municipalities and Indigenous communities across the province deliver these projects. In 2025 the BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program (BCATIG) was put on pause.

Looking back on three decades of funding, the evidence is clear: BCATIG has helped expand access to active transportation, improve safety, and create healthier, more connected communities throughout B.C.

Today, B.C. needs BCATIG back.

We’re calling on the Province to restore the BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants Program so that people of all ages and abilities can get to where they need to go safely and comfortably.

The curb is one of the most valuable pieces of public space a city owns, yet we often use it for just one thing: storing parked cars.

What if that space could do more?

Across the country, cities are changing how curb space is used. Outdoor dining, delivery zones, bike parking, and other flexible uses can help support local businesses, improve mobility, and create more value for the community.

Rethinking how we allocate public space is one of the simplest ways to create more productive and financially resilient places.
