"Birds that depend on Iona Island (xʷəyeyət in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓) are monitored at the Iona Island Bird Observatory. This is a space to connect with nature and learn about birds up close. Open most mornings during the spring and fall migration seasons, roughly Apr 15 - May 31 and Aug 24 - Oct 4."

Spring monitoring is starting next month! This new map at the Iona Beach Regional Park building (main parking lot) will help visitors, and people like you, find the IIBO. Come visit us during migration season.

Welcome to our Spring Bird ID Walks Series! 🐥🌷🔍

Learn identification tips and tricks for a variety of wintering passerines, waterfowl, raptors, and shorebirds. No matter what your skill level, ID field trips are a great way to brush up on your skills while socializing with other nature-loving folk in the community.

The first walk will be on Sunday, March 15, 2026 at Iona Beach Regional Park, led by Chloe Boynton. We will be meeting in the parking lot near the washrooms at 10:00 AM.

The second walk will be on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at ƛ̓éxətəm Regional Park (Colony Farms), led by Mike Boyd. We will be meeting at the parking lot at the end of Colony Farm Rd (beside the community garden off Hwy 7) at 10:00 AM.

These walks are approximately 2-3 hours, rain or shine. Both walks are rated ‘Easy’ in terms of difficulty: mostly gentle terrain with minor uneven spots.

Sign-up on BetterImpact or CanadaHelps (link in bio). Please note that only existing members are able to register on Better Impact — for more information on becoming a member, please visit wildresearch.ca/become-a-member/. Non-members can sign-up on CanadaHelps.

Meet Manuel, the artist creating a mural for the Iona Island Bird Observatory's banding hut as part of Stories in Flight. 🎨

"Manuel Axel Strain (b. 1990) is from the lands and waters of the xʷməθkʷəyəm (Musqueam), Simpcw, and Syilx peoples. Creating artwork in collaboration with and reference to their family, shared experiences become a source of agency for Strain. They perceive their work to confront and undermine the imposed realities of colonialism, proposing a new space beyond its oppressive systems of power. Strain was recently featured at Richmond Art Gallery and the Polygon Gallery, was longlisted for the 2022 Sobey Award, and was a 2022 recipient of the Portfolio Prize."

We’re really excited to unveil the mural and other interpretive signage at the upcoming community event! Manuel is drawing on pre-classical Coast Salish visual languages for the mural, to reflect IIBO’s monitoring work while honouring Indigenous understandings of birds as relatives and messengers.

Join us at Iona Beach Regional Park on Sunday Feb 22 (1-4pm). Register at canadahelps.org/en/charities/wildresearch-society/events/stories-in-flight-community-event.

Behind the scenes 🎬 Julia Avison () has been creating beautiful watercolour art as part of the Stories in Flight project at the Iona Island Bird Observatory.

Julia is a pilot and artist originally from Ontario, who grew up exploring Canada’s wilderness through backpacking and camping. The natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest sparked her passion for painting and sharing her love of nature through traditional ink and watercolor paint techniques.

Join us at the community event on Sunday Feb 22nd (1-4pm) at the Iona Beach Regional Park to see the completed signage! Register at canadahelps.org/en/charities/wildresearch-society/events/stories-in-flight-community-event.
