National Indigenous Peoples Day, celebrated each year on June 21, is an opportunity to honour the cultures, languages, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.
While it was officially proclaimed in 1996, the movement to create a national day of recognition was led by Indigenous leaders and communities for decades before that. June 21 was chosen intentionally because it coincides with the summer solstice, a time that has long held cultural and spiritual significance for many Indigenous Peoples.
Today, National Indigenous Peoples Day is both a celebration and a chance to learn. Communities across the country gather to share culture through music, dance, food, storytelling, art, and ceremony, creating welcoming spaces for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to connect and learn together.
PLEA Community Services will be joining two local celebrations this weekend, and we invite you to stop by and say hello!
