Our Story

Warm Em Up is an annual campaign benefiting individuals living with serious mental illness. It’s been a campaign about the basics since 2006. What’s more basic than new socks + underwear? The campaign started in 2006 as an initiative to combat stigma and meet specific needs, as communicated by the recipients themselves. It's that much easier to focus on your mental health when your basic day-to-day needs are being met. We partner with existing community-based mental health providers like The Kettle Society and set out to collect the item(s) most needed to support their members. Donations typically drop off after the fundraising-rich holiday season. Plus, certain items aren't typically donated. Each year, a community-based mental health provider is chosen as the beneficiary, and the Warm Em Up Team, our sponsors and our community of Warmbassadors undertake a targeted item drive and mental health awareness campaign to show our fellow citizens they are being heard. We then host a fun distribution event on Valentine’s Day for the recipients, led by mental health clinicians, researchers, and our good friends. Valentine's Day can be an especially difficult time. The event is strategically timed to meet a common need... and provide a little love. There are great conversations, lots of smiles and a little bit of warmth for a lot of people. The recipient organization is provided all extra items for their outreach team, advocates and shelters to distribute as they deem necessary. Our organization has long been supported by the University of British Columbia's Translational Psychiatric Genetics Group led by Dr. Jehannine Austin. Special thanks to Richardson GMP Vancouver for their generous support in recent years.
