"You can't be what you can't see."

With support from SCWIST, the Skill Sisters travelled from Yellowknife to Edmonton to attend Jill of All Trades, exploring careers in the skilled trades through hands-on learning and industry exposure. Such amazing opportunities that inspire, champion, and open doors for the next generation.

At the Youth Summit, Indigenous youth shared their perspectives on the relationship between culture, knowledge, and STEM.

Their reflections highlighted the importance of honouring teachings passed down through generations while exploring how those teachings can continue to inform innovation, discovery, and future opportunities.

We're grateful to all the youth who shared their stories and experiences with our community.

Today, on International Women in Engineering Day, we're celebrating the theme , recognizing the creativity, innovation, and courage of women solving complex challenges through engineering.

Whether they're designing robots, developing sustainable technologies, improving infrastructure, or tackling problems we haven't imagined yet, women engineers are helping shape a better future for all of us.

The students pictured here are taking their own first steps into that future through hands-on robotics experiences that encourage curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
While progress has been made, barriers still exist. The enthusiasm we hear from youth across our programs is inspiring. From imagining solutions to environmental challenges to exploring how engineering can intersect with fields like neuroscience, young people are already thinking creatively about how they can shape the future.

Women remain underrepresented in many engineering disciplines and continue to face challenges related to workplace culture, retention, advancement, and belonging.

At SCWIST, we're working to change that. Through programs, advocacy, partnerships, and systems change initiatives, we are helping create safer, more inclusive STEM environments where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Today, we celebrate the women already leading the way and the next generation preparing to follow in their footsteps.

During National Indigenous History Month, we’re sharing reflections from Simon Brascoupé of First Nations Education Administrators Association on Two-Eyed Seeing, STEM, and the need to make universities and colleges safer for Indigenous students:

“Universities, colleges, are not safe places for Indigenous students, and we have to make those places safe for them so they can flourish and take the Two-Eyed Seeing approach where Indigenous knowledge is seen as equal to science.”

Simon also spoke to the opportunity Canada has to bring Indigenous Knowledge and STEM together:

“I think we have an opportunity in Canada to bring together Indigenous knowledge, STEM, and we could be competitive and show the rest of the world how to change the world in a sustainable way.”

We appreciate Simon for naming both the work still needed in post-secondary spaces and the possibilities ahead for Indigenous knowledge in Canada. At SCWIST, we recognize that building a stronger STEM future means listening to Indigenous leaders, respecting Indigenous knowledge, and supporting learning environments where Indigenous students can flourish

A resume is more than a list of jobs, courses, and certificates.

It's often your first opportunity to show an employer who you are, what you've accomplished, and why you're a strong fit for the role.

Before you hit submit, take a step back and look at your resume through the eyes of a recruiter.
📄 Can they quickly understand your story?
📄 Can they see the impact you've made?
📄 Can they identify the skills and experiences that make you a strong candidate?

In today's job market, a strong resume won't guarantee an interview, but it can help ensure that your experience, skills, and potential aren't overlooked.

The good news? Resume writing is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned and improved over time.

Many participants in Society for Canadian Women in Science & Technology (SCWIST) programming, like Skills for Success, work one-on-one with an Employment Coordinator who provides support with resume development, interview preparation, career planning, job search strategies, and identifying transferable skills that employers are looking for.

What's one thing you've learned about resume writing that you wish you knew earlier?

“The CHA is excited to partner with SCWIST to support the continued growth, innovation, and long-term success of Canada’s hydrogen sector. As Canada advances its clean energy economy, partnerships that strengthen workforce development, knowledge sharing, and industry collaboration will be essential. Together, we look forward to creating meaningful opportunities for engagement across STEM and clean energy, while helping to connect talent, industry, and innovation from coast to coast.” David Billedeau, President and CEO.

This is just the beginning. Stay tuned for what's ahead.

If applying for jobs feels harder than it used to, you're not imagining it.

Over the past few years, the hiring landscape has changed dramatically.

Since 2020, economic uncertainty, changing labour needs, AI, and global pressures like tariffs have all impacted the job market. At the same time, applying online has made opportunities accessible to more people than ever before, meaning employers often receive hundreds or even thousands of applications for a single role.

For job seekers, that can look like:
📄 Qualified candidates not getting interviews
🤖 Applications being screened by AI before a human sees them
👻 Job postings that may already have internal candidates in mind
📞 More rounds of interviews and assessments
📈 Increased competition for fewer opportunities

But there is another side to the story.

The same technology changing hiring is also helping job seekers. AI can help tailor resumes, prepare for interviews, identify skills gaps, and uncover opportunities that may have otherwise been missed.

The job search process has changed. That doesn't mean your career goals are out of reach.
Building relevant skills, gaining experience, expanding your network, and finding the right support can make a meaningful difference.

At Society for Canadian Women in Science & Technology (SCWIST), we're committed to helping students and early career professionals navigate today's workforce through career exploration, networking opportunities, career fairs, mentorship, and Skills for Success programs designed to help you build confidence for the future.

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced while job searching recently?
