JQT Vancouver 📸🔙⏳🥹 - circa June to December 2019!

For the rest of 2019, the JQT Dream Team organized meetups at Pride events and started to build relationships with Jewish and 2SLGBTQIA+ community organisations. Activities included gathering at Vancouver Pride Society's Eastside Pride and Picnic in the Park, viewing the Pride Parade on Jack & Gord's balcony, as well discussing Intersectional History of Pride in Canada with Moishe House Vancouver, q***ring Axis Vancouver's Summer Social, noshing at Dipples Apples in JQT Honey, carving veggies at JQT & Or Shalom Synagogue's Sukkot Harvest Potluck, engaging in Real Talk with Rabbi Adam Stein, and drinking hot cocoa and lighting candles at JQT Hanukkah Snowshoe with Rabbi Philip Gibbs.

JQT Vancouver 📸🔙⏳🥹 - circa September 2018 to April 2019!

Following the success of 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐃𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 in August 2018, members formed the JQT Dream Team and our first few activities included selling rainbow challahs by Chef Menajem Catering at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver to raise funds for future JQT events, q***ring Axis Vancouver's Hanukkah Party at The Imperial, noshing together on Cartem's Donuts at G**s 'n Gelt, selling hamentashen cookies by Nava Catering at the JCC to raise more money, showing up at Or Shalom Synagogue's Purim party, and organizing our first big and bumping event: 𝐃𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐞: 𝐀 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 at Sunset Community Centre!

The Jewish High Holidays are upon us and here at JQT Vancouver, we've begun the process of archiving all of our work for posterity's sake. Get ready for some throwback content from over the years! In the meantime, we wanted to share with you something that is brewing even in our twilight hours as an organisation.

A little tikkun mission is forming between JQT Vancouver's Carmel Tanaka and Louis Brier Home & Hospital's Rabbi Nina King-Madlem around Uncle Max and his partner, George, along with family member Leah Deslauriers. Thanks to oral histories about Uncle Max and his husband George from family members with bits and bobs over the years, JQT Vancouver learned about some difficult past grievances at the Louis Brier, which were brought up in a recent workshop training by the JQT Seniors Initiative for the Louis Brier. In attendance was their new Chaplain, Rabbi Nina, who sparked the idea of creating a meaningful tikkun.

Last week, the three of us met to go over the details and begin dreaming up a way to approach this in a good way. It may take a while, but the seeds have been planted. This is a beautiful reminder of why it is so important to record our stories and to share them widely. You never know who may be listening and in a position to help. Shana Tova J-Cuties!

Lovely to reconnect with the one and only Nana Schewitz and to meet the iconic Peaches, who delivered an incredible show last night at the Commodore. Peaches ended the show with a beautiful cover of Barbra Streisand’s Funny Girl song 🎶 People 🎶

As the final step in the 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝟐.𝟎: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐋𝐆𝐁𝐓𝐐𝟐𝐒𝐈𝐀+ 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 and as a parting gift from JQT Vancouver before we close our doors (Jewish High Holidays 2026), we conducted an updated 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 to understand what progress has been made on our 13 Calls to Action by local BC Jewish community organisations, what still requires improvement, and what may be completely new needs for our community in 2026. We also collected recommendations for local BC LGBTQ2SIA+ community organisations in 2026.

Dear JQT community past and present,

As you may already be aware, we will be closing JQT Vancouver by Jewish New Year (September 2026). Before we close our doors, we will release our final report from our 2026 Community Needs Assessment (coming soon!) and we will collect reflections from the JQT community (a.k.a. YOU!) for our 𝐉𝐐𝐓 𝐕𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭.

The purpose of this project is to document the organisational history and impact of 𝐉𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐱 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 (𝐃𝐁𝐀 “𝐉𝐐𝐓 𝐕𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐫”) in the Jewish q***r and trans community between the years of 2018 and 2026.

𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭
This paper examines the experiences of Jewish faculty in Canadian higher education in the aftermath of 7 October 2023. Drawing on in-depth interviews, the study uses the framework of microaggressions to analyze how antisemitism manifests in campus interactions and institutional spaces. Participants reported experiences ranging from overt hostility, subtle stereotyping, and routine dismissals of their lived experiences, fostering alienation, isolation, and professional withdrawal. At the same time, many described the acts of resistance, activism, and identity reclamation. Framed within critical theories of education, the study aims to unpack antisemitism and reconnect it with equity and anti-racism frameworks, while also developing tools to recognize Jewish difference. By centring Jewish counter-narratives, this research highlights the voices of those at the receiving end of antisemitic microaggressions. It contributes to critical education scholarship, calling on universities to recognize antisemitism as a systemic issue deserving sustained attention, within broader commitments to diversity and inclusion.
