🐾 In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day, we're proud to highlight a past AWFC-funded project led by Nunavut Animal Rescue that promoted animal welfare education in Nunavut.

The Animal Welfare Education Project worked to address animal welfare challenges through youth education and community engagement in Iqaluit. During a week-long veterinary clinic, children had the opportunity to learn directly from veterinarians and veterinary technicians about responsible pet ownership, including animal care, feeding, grooming, and safety.

By providing educational resources to local schools and empowering young people with knowledge and skills, this project helped build a foundation for compassionate animal care that benefits both animals and communities.

AWFC is honoured to support initiatives that strengthen animal welfare through education, collaboration, and community-led solutions.

💚 Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day as we celebrate the knowledge, leadership, and contributions of Indigenous communities across Canada.

🐿️ AWFC would like to highlight the work of the Winnipeg Humane Society and Animal Justice to prohibit the use of anticoagulant poison (Rozol) and suffocating foam (RoCon) to control Richardson’s ground squirrels in Winnipeg parks.

⚠️ These methods raise serious animal welfare concerns. Anticoagulant poisons cause a slow death through internal bleeding, often over hours or days, while animals may experience pain, weakness, and distress. Suffocating foams act by oxygen deprivation in underground burrows, raising concerns about fear, respiratory distress, and prolonged suffering.

🐾 There are also broader risks, including secondary poisoning of birds of prey and other wildlife through contaminated carcasses, as well as potential risks to companion animals.

📢 Animal Justice and the Winnipeg Humane Society have filed an appeal challenging the provincial permit that allows these methods. The appeal is now underway.

Today, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Valli Fraser-Celin as she concludes her term as Vice President of AWFC 💛🐾

Since 2023, Valli has brought extraordinary dedication, expertise, and leadership to our Board of Directors. As Vice President, she has played an important role in guiding our organization’s growth, supporting our strategic priorities, and helping ensure that donor funds create meaningful change for animals across the country.

While she is stepping down from the Vice President role, we’re delighted that Valli will continue serving on our Board of Directors and will co-chair AWFC’s Grants Committee alongside our new VP, Sue O’Neill. Together, they will help steward one of the most important parts of our work: investing in animal welfare initiatives that make a difference in communities across Canada.

Thank you, Valli, for your leadership, your compassion, and your ongoing commitment to AWFC’s mission. We are grateful for all you have contributed, and excited to continue working alongside you in this next chapter.

Please join us in thanking Valli for her incredible service and leadership!

🦜 Today is World Parrot Day!

Parrots are intelligent, social, long-lived wild animals with highly specialized care needs. Unfortunately, many parrots experience neglect, trauma, and repeated rehoming because their needs are misunderstood.

That’s why AWFC is excited to support Parrot Partners Canada as a 2026 grantee with $8,000 toward their project, Parrot Essentials for Animal Welfare Professionals.

This project will provide specialized training and tools to help humane societies and animal welfare professionals better assess parrot welfare, identify care concerns, and safely support birds in need.

Through education and science-based care, we can improve the lives of parrots across Canada. 💚

We’re excited to celebrate Sue O’Neill as she steps into her new role as Vice President of AWFC this May 💛🐾

Since joining our Board of Directors in April 2024, Sue has brought deep compassion and insight to our work - especially through her focus on humane education, the human-animal bond, and the connection between animal welfare and gender-based violence.

Through her work in human services, Sue has seen firsthand how life-changing the bond between people and animals can be. That perspective continues to inspire her leadership and commitment to creating a better world for both people and animals.

As Vice President, Sue will continue to help guide AWFC’s mission and strengthen the impact we’re making across Canada - and we’re so grateful to have her in this role.

Here’s Sue's message to our supporters:
“Thank you for funding such incredible work. You are truly making a difference in the lives of animals across the country. You are all my animal welfare heroes!” 🐾

Want to support the kind of impact Sue helps make possible? Consider making a donation to AWFC - you can donate using this link: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/143806

Your gift can help create lasting change for animals across Canada 🇨🇦

For 60 years, the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada has funded research, education, outreach, and community-based projects that improve animal welfare.
In 2025, AWFC granted over $73,000 to support initiatives advancing companion animal care, wildlife welfare, farm animal welfare, veterinary access, humane education, and more 💪

With your support, we can fund even more high-impact projects led by organizations working on the front lines of animal welfare. Your gift to the AWFC helps support a range of trusted organizations advancing animal welfare across Canada.

Every grant is reviewed by a volunteer board of animal welfare experts, helping ensure donor funds are guided by evidence, ethics, and the potential for meaningful, lasting impact.

🐾🌱 Today we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity!

Every species plays an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems - and healthy ecosystems are essential for animal welfare. When habitats are destroyed or biodiversity declines, animals are often the first to suffer.

At the Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada, we support initiatives that recognize the connection between animal welfare, conservation, and community well-being. Protecting biodiversity helps create safer, healthier futures for wildlife, domestic animals, and people alike.

Together, we can support a more compassionate and sustainable world. 💚
