Connie Easton, school counsellor for over 20 years, shares that it can be helpful to meet your child where they are at, as you prepare for back-to-school.

Supporting your child’s mental health and well-being can include:

☀️ Maintaining some links to activities your child enjoyed over the summer, to slow down the sense that everything is changing or ending abruptly.
🌳 Going on nature walks, having family picnics outside and encouraging kids to play surrounded by nature has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood.

Grief can feel heavy and confusing, especially for kids who are still trying to make sense of the world. What matters most is that you are there—listening, comforting, and creating a safe space for them to feel what they feel.

Supporting a child through loss is one of the hardest things a parent can face, but your care, consistency, and compassion make a world of difference.

If you’re looking for resources, guidance, and support on talking to your child about grief, check out: 👉 keltymentalhealth.ca/grief-and-loss
